International collaborations

International cooperation is a means and a strategy for achieving higher quality research and education. Uppsala University works with this in different ways, including being part of several networks, projects, and regional centres with other universities around the world. Uppsala University also engages in specific internationalisation matters within research and education.

Africa

PEP is an Erasmus+ project working towards increasing the capacity to teach professional English at six universities in Mali, Ivory Coast, and Burkina Faso. One of the project's ultimate goals is to increase student and researcher skills in spoken and written scientific English. At Uppsala University, the project is run as a collaboration between the Unit for Global Partnership (GLO), the International Science Programme (ISP), and the Unit for Professional English (UPE).

The network SANORD, Southern African–Nordic Centre, consists of universities, colleges, and research institutes from Nordic countries and southern Africa. Uppsala University was one of the eight founding universities, but the number of member universities is now close to 50. SANORD organises an annual conference where researchers and administrators from member institutions have the possibility to meet.

South Africa - Sweden University Forum (SASUF) is a collaborative project between Swedish and South African universities. It is coordinated by Uppsala University. The purpose of the project is to bring together researchers, teachers, and students, as well as research funders, businesses, and ministries by organising common activities in both countries.

Apart from the partner universities, SASUF is funded by STINT (the Swedish Foundation for International Cooperation in Research and Higher Education) from Sweden and by NRF (the National Research Foundation) and DHET (the Department of Higher Education and Training) from South Africa.

Asia

MIRAI 2.0 is a collaborative project between leading Swedish and Japanese universities. It aspires to strengthen academic cooperation between Sweden and Japan.The project is particularly aimed at researchers who are at an early stage of their careers and want to develop joint Swedish-Japanese research projects in innovation, ageing, materials science, sustainability or innovation and entrepreneurship.

Sweden Korea Education, Research, and Innovation Collaboration (SKERIC) is a collaborative project between eight Swedish and Korean universities. SKERIC aims to equip some of the best and most outstanding young researchers and innovators with the necessary tools, skills, and networks to become leading researchers, academic leaders, and prominent innovators capable of addressing current societal challenges and advocating for democracy and academic freedom.

SASUF is funded by partner universities and by STINT (the Swedish Foundation for Internationalization of Higher Education and Research).

Korea Foundation for Advanced Studies (KFAS) is a private South Korean research foundation that has promoted international academic and cultural exchange since the 1970s. Uppsala University is part of the two-year pilot program "Korea-Nordic Future Challenge Programme," initiated by KFAS. The program provides an opportunity for future young leaders to address specific issues related to the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals and propose solutions to contribute to creating a sustainable future.

The collaboration between Uppsala University and Hallym University started in 2005. Hallym-Uppsala Symposium is a central part of the collaboration. The symposium is arranged alternately by the universities, and the topics that have been in focus include antibiotics, medicine development, stem cells, regenerative medicine, and several other strong research areas at the two academies.

Europe

The Baltic University Programme (BUP) comprises member universities in the drainage area of the Baltic Sea Region. The main aim is to support the work to build strong regional educational and research communities in the region. The programme offers, among other things, university courses in sustainable development, environmental protection and democracy.

The Coimbra Group was founded in with the goal of promoting academic and cultural ties between the universities. It has created a range of scholarships, summer schools, long term projects, prizes and more. The group is actively involved in policy decisions regarding higher education on a European level and works as an expert group in a number of different arenas.

Within the European Universities Alliance ENLIGHT, Uppsala University collaborates with eight other European universities. The larger goal is to empower the students of Europe to become globally engaged citizens who are not afraid to take on the major societal challenges. In the long run, students should be able to freely take courses at all participating universities and thus tailor their own higher education.

SkillMill is the name of both a strategic partnership project financed by the EU within the framework of Erasmus+ and an application created within this project. SkillMill is coordinated by Uppsala University and also includes other European universities. The project's goal is to develop a structured method to help students identify, understand and articulate the soft skills they gain from studying abroad. Thanks to the SkillMill app, the lessons learned during exchange studies or international traineeships can be presented as valuable merits in the labor market.

ACCESS (Academic collaboration Chile Sweden) is a collaboration platform between universities in Chile and Sweden. The aim is to establish relations between researchers and PhD-students in the two countries, in order to discuss challenges that are common for both countries. The network focuses on the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals no 3, 11, 14 and 15, relating to health, sustainable cities, sea and biodiversity.

SIREUS is a collaboration project between The Swedish American Chambers of Commerce (SACC-USA) and several Swedish universities. The project focuses on knowledge exchange within innovation, research, entrepreneurship and talent mobility for students and researchers between Sweden and USA. SIREUS builds on SACC-USA’s bilateral business and talent network and goes on during 2022-2025. The Swedish Embassy in Washington D.C. and the Swedish Institute support the platform.

Scholars at Risk (SAR) protects scholars suffering grave threats to their lives, liberty, and well-being. Several hundred higher education institutions worldwide are members of the network. The Swedish section works actively to be able to offer researchers in the risk zone temporary services in Sweden.

2017-2020

The Latin American and European Cooperation on Innovation and Entrepreneurship (LISTO) is an Erasmus+ capacity-building project. It brings together universities from Brazil, Argentina, and Uruguay in Lain America and universities from Sweden, the Netherlands, and Spain in Europe. The project aims to promote the exchange of knowledge and good practice for teachers, innovation staff, and university management. LISTO focuses on three work packages: 1. university-industry relations (AIMday), entrepreneurship in education, and university strategies for innovation.

EASTEM (Euro-Asia Collaboration for Enhancing STEM Education) is a capacity-building project within the framework of the Erasmus+ programme. The project aims to improve the employability of STEM graduates in Vietnam, Indonesia, and Thailand by developing the competence of lecturers and bridging the gap between industry and academia.

The Ministry of Education and Training of Vietnam and the Vietnam Electronics Industries Association are associated partners in EASTEM. The project is coordinated by Uppsala University.

RED4SUS aims to build capacity for Innovation Leadership in the Project Development Office of the State Government Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. The programme is working with the Design Thinking methodology to develop new approaches for sustainable innovation and SDG action. The collaboration is between three partners: Uppsala University, Federal University Rio Grande do Su and the State Government Rio Grande do Sul. RED4SUS is financed by the Swedish Institute's Public Sector Innovation Programme.

VAMOS (Virtual Exchange to Tackle Wicked Problems: Latin American and European Collaboration on Education for Sustainable Development) is a capacity-building project within the framework of the Erasmus+ programme. The project gathers six Latin American universities (Brazil and Honduras), two European universities (Sweden and Italy) and one NGO (UNICollaboration). VAMOS is being coordinated in collaboration with SWEDESD and the master programme in sustainable destination development.

The aim of VAMOS is to design a virtual course for students focused on complex sustainability challenges and to let the universities exchange experiences in internationalisation, virtual teaching and Education for Sustainable Development.
