Since 2014, Uppsala University has an office in Hanoi, Vietnam. The office aims to strengthen collaboration with Vietnamese universities, but also with partners in neighboring countries.

About us

The Uppsala University office in Hanoi develops cooperation in research and education, through joint study programmes, courses and exchange opportunities for teachers, students and researchers. The office also works with student recruitment to increase the number of Vietnamese students studying in Sweden and at Uppsala University. The office also develops internship opportunities for Swedish students in Vietnam, coordinates alumni activities and supports capacity development programmes in higher education.

Collaboration with Vietnamese Universities

The Uppsala University office in Vietnam collaborates with a number of Vietnamese universities:

  • Foreign Trade University (FTU)
    Memorandum of understanding and Student exchange agreement with the Department of Business at Uppsala University starting spring 2019.
  • Hanoi University of Science and Technology (HUST)
    Memorandum of understanding and agreement for a 3+1 programme with the Department of Computer Science at Uppsala University and Global ICT at HUST, starting autumn 2018. Another collaboration is the ICM (International Credit Mobility) programme, which supports student-, teacher- and staff exchange with Uppsala University.
  • VNU
    Memorandum of understanding and Joint Master Programme in Public Policy and Public Management (MPPM) between University of Economics and Business (UEB) with the Department of Government at Uppsala University since 2009. Now the degree is awarded by UEB, where Uppsala University contributes with two courses. The Department of Anthropology at the University of Social Science and Humanities (USSH) has a collaboration for student- and teacher exchange with their sister department at Uppsala University. This collaboration also includes research collaboration with SWEDESD at Uppsala University.
  • Hue University
    Memorandum of understanding and partner of the EU-funded capacity development project EVENT.
  • Hanoi University of Public Health
    Memorandum of understanding signed with the Department of Women’s and Children’s Health at Uppsala University, where part of the course, Challenges in Global Health, is given in Hanoi and provided by HUPH.
  • Ho Chi Minh University of Technology and Education (HCMUTE)
    Memorandum of understanding and a partner of the EVENT-project.
  • Ho Chi Minh University of Technology (HUTECH)
    Memorandum of understanding and a partner of the EVENT-project.
  • Vinh University
    Memorandum of understanding with the Division of Microsystem Technology at Uppsala University, involving cooperation in education and research in the field of micro- and nanosystems.

Student Recruitment

The Uppsala University office in Vietnam gives high priority to student recruitment activities and to increase the number of Vietnamese students coming to Sweden and Uppsala. This is carried out in close collaboration with the Embassy of Sweden in Hanoi organising Study in Sweden events, EU study fairs as well as Pre-departure events.  The Uppsala University office additionally participates in other recruitment fairs and roadshows, organise FIKA-events, visit Universities and High Schools as well as give counselling to individual students and help them with their application. Alumni activities

Uppsala University’s alumni chapter in Vietnam is very active, organising several different activities throughout the year and is also closely connected to the recruitment activities. In spring 2018, the Sweden Alumni Network Vietnam (SANV) was officially certified by Swedish Institute and will continue to work as a bridge between the two countries.

Internships and MFS

There are several opportunities for Swedish students to carry out their internship in Vietnam, where the Uppsala University office have contacts within the following fields: Teacher Training Programme (information in Swedish), Nursing, Business studies, Technology and Engineering, as well as with research institutions and NGOs, more closely related to the fields of Social Sciences and Humanities.

The Uppsala University office also provides support to those wanting to do their Minor Field Study (information in Swedish) in Vietnam, where we can provide contacts in different fields.

For students coming to Vietnam for their internship or MFS, the Uppsala University office can support with practical arrangements such as visas, accommodation and social networks.

Specific projects

  • EVENT is a capacity development project, funded by the EU Erasmus+ programme. EVENT focuses on employability within higher education in Vietnam and the project is coordinated by Uppsala University. The other Vietnamese partners within the project are the Ministry of Education and Training, the Ministry of Labor, Invalids and Social Affairs and the Vietnamese Universities; HUTECH, HCMUTE, Hué University, National Economic University and Hanoi University of Industry. Two additional European Universities; University of Valencia and the University of Groningen are also part of the project.

  • TRAC is an ongoing project (2016–2019) funded by STINT which is mainly focusing on medicine. The Vietnamese partners are the Research Institute for Child Health, Hanoi Medical University and Ho Chi Minh University of Medicine and Pharmacy. The Swedish partners in the project are Uppsala University, Karolinska Institutet, Umeå University, Gothenburg University and Linkoping University, where KI has been coordinating the project. The project is and has been focusing on courses within the medicine field, research projects, seminars, and capacity development. The projects at Uppsala University are within research and clinical cooperation in the field of infectious diseases, Tropical Medicine and the nursing programme.
