Uppsala University is a comprehensive research-intensive university with a strong international standing. Our mission is to pursue top-quality research and education and to interact constructively with society. Our most important assets are all the individuals whose curiosity and dedication make Uppsala University one of Sweden’s most exciting workplaces. Uppsala University has 44.000 students, 7.100 employees and a turnover of SEK 7 billion.
The Division of Scientific Computing at the Department of Information Technology at Uppsala University is a center for research and education in Scientific Computing. The research has a broad scope, including numerical analysis, applied scientific computing, high-performance computing, and applied cloud computing. The division engages in a broad range of collaborative projects in computational science and engineering (CSE), industrial applications and CSE software development. Application fields include fluid flow, electromagnetics, acoustics, geology, systems biology, quantum mechanics, financial mathematics, and genetics. The Division has an extensive international and national research network.
The graduate education program in scientific computing has so far resulted in over 80 PhDs. Many of them have continued a career as leading researchers in Scientific Computing.
The overall target of the project is to devise, develop, and study machine learning algorithms and implementations. The emphasis for the project is on the scientific computing viewpoint of machine learning algorithms and methods; specifically set-ups of compute-intense character requiring advanced tools from high-performance computing. Concretely we aim to solve problems in one or several of the suggested research/application areas described in the full project description (see http://user.it.uu.se/~stefane/formalia/SciComp_ML.pdf). We offer an interdisciplinary project which to a high degree can be formed by the selected candidate. Suitable targets of research within the project include high performance algorithms on multi- and manycore computers, but also design and theoretical studies of algorithms for compute intensive machine learning or data assimilation applications.
A PhD position in Scientific Computing requires a Master of Science in for example engineering physics or applied mathematics, or a corresponding degree in a field relevant for the topic of the PhD thesis. Good communication skills in English are necessary. The position is for a maximum of five years and includes departmental duties at a level of at most 20% (typically teaching). There are university guidelines regarding salary level. https://mp.uu.se/en/web/info/stod/hr-guide/doktorander/finansieringsformer/doktorandanst-c3-a4llning
Rules regarding PhD positions can be found in the goals and regulations of Uppsala University http://regler.uu.se/Rules_and_regulations_in_English/
Applications should include a description of research interests and past experience, a CV, copies of exams, degrees and grades, a copy of Master thesis (or a draft thereof), relevant publications, and other relevant documents. Candidates are encouraged to provide contact information to reference persons and/or letters of support.
