Postdoctoral position in Virology, Zoonosis Science Center
Sort on published: 2017-03-10
Uppsala University is an international research university focused on the development of science and education. Our most important assets are all the individuals who with their curiosity and their dedication make Uppsala University one of Sweden’s most exciting work places. Uppsala University has 40,000 students, 7,000 employees and a turnover of SEK 6,5 billion.
The Zoonosis Science Center is devoted to studies of zoonotic pathogens of importance for human health. We are interested in zoonotic ecology and epidemiology, host pathogen interactions, pathogenesis and infectivity as well as antibiotic resistance of major zoonotic pathogens including influenza A virus, hantaviruses, flaviviruses as well as several bacterial pathogens. We strive for an interdisciplinary environment combining scientists in the fields of molecular microbiology, medicine, veterinary medicine and ecology with experience from many countries.
The post doc will study molecular mechanisms of interspecies transmission of influenza A virus between birds. This involves infection experiments in different bird models as well as molecular studies of the viruses used. The approach is translational and will compare viral genetic changes to functional aspects of adhesion, immunogenicity and interaction with the host innate immune system. The post doc will plan and perform infection experiments including sampling for virus as well as blood and tissues from the birds. He/she will also perform genetic analysis of viruses as well as transcriptomic studies of the innate host response to infection. The work includes taking part in supervision of PhD students and undergraduate students.
The applicant should have a PhD in microbiology, veterinary medicine, medicine or medical sciences and completed his/her PhD studies within 3 years from the application dead-line. Since the project is based on experimental infection studies in animals, experience from such work is an absolute requirement; experience of infection experiments in birds is preferable. Experience in basic virology as well as practical and in silico molecular work with microorganisms are important qualifications. Personal qualifications are important, such as good skills in communication and collaboration with other members of the research group.
Merits of advantage
Good skills in bioinformatics and molecular genetics in both viral and eukaryotic systems are merits, as well as good background knowledge in zoonotic ecology of influenza A or other viruses.
Application: The application should include a short description of the applicant and his/her experience, CV and list of publications, copies of exams, degrees and grades as well as contact details of two references. Letter(s) of recommendation may be included.
