The Centre for Gender Research is an interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary research unit that currently employs 40 people. The Centre for Gender Research offers a creative and diverse environment with researchers who have their backgrounds in various disciplines in the faculties of the humanities, social sciences, natural/technological sciences and medicine. The Centre for Gender Research is offering one position for a doctoral student in Gender Studies with a specialization in science education research focused on biology and/or chemistry education. The PhD program comprises four years of study, including the equivalent of one year full-time course work (60 ECTS) plus the equivalent of three years’ full-time thesis work (180 ECTS). The PhD candidate will be expected to contribute to the research milieu both at the Centre and at a science department, and to engage actively with the work in the PhD program. The PhD candidate will benefit from training in both Swedish and English. PhDs may be asked to contribute to teaching and/or administration. Admission 1 September 2017, or by agreement.
Anyone who has obtained a degree at advanced level, and has successfully completed courses to at least 240 ECTS, of which at least 60 ECTS are at advanced level (H7), is basically eligible to apply. The relevant courses or their equivalent may have been completed either in Sweden or abroad. To be eligible for this specific position, the applicant must have completed at least a BA/BSc with a minimum of 90 credits in natural sciences (biology and/or chemistry) or have acquired a degree in other subjects with a corresponding orientation/relevance (e.g. Secondary or Upper Secondary School Teacher Education Programme). A degree or completed courses in Gender Studies, or in other subjects with a Gender Studies component, is particularly advantageous, as are courses in Science Education. For this position applicants who lack a Gender Studies component in previous degrees may also be eligible for admission.
Research interests in any of the following areas are particularly welcome:
- What norms and values are conveyed in the teaching of the science content and/or in popularization of the subject and how is the desired biologist /chemist constituted?
- Comparative studies of various practices within/between chemistry and biology disciplines;
- The importance of practical work (as labs or field works) for the disciplinary culture and for student learning.
The application should include a brief CV and a text explaining the applicant’s research interest including a project plan (max 5 pp). Appendixes to the application to be included are relevant degree papers (BA, MA theses), and copies of degree diplomas or similar that document eligibility and academic merit.
