Our most important assets are all the individuals whose curiosity and dedication make Uppsala University one of Sweden’s most exciting workplaces. Uppsala University has 42,000 students, 7,000 employees and a turnover of SEK 6.7 billion.
A four year PhD position in Meteorology focusing on air-sea exchange processes of energy, humidity and carbonat is available at the Department of Earth Sciences, Programme for Air, Water and Landscape Sciences.
Project description: The purpose of the project is to investigate the air-sea exchange of energy, water vapor and carbon (mainly carbon dioxide but also methane) and the processes influencing this exchange. There is presently knowledge lacking on these processes and the methods to introduce them into climate models. The project aims at using existing and new data on air-sea exchange processes, and also to evaluate the variations (horizontal and vertical) of carbon dioxide concentration in the surface water as well as other parameters as mixing depth and stratification. The project is linked to the ICOS-station Östergarnsholm (http://www.icos-sweden.se/station_ostergarnsholm.html) and the BONUS project INTEGRAL (Integrated carboN and TracE Gas monitoRing for the bALtic sea).
Requirements: The applicant shall have a university science degree in meteorology or similar. Other technical or science degrees may also be considered, in particularly oceanography or marine chemistry. The successful candidate shall have a solid base in mathematics, physics, and basic computer skills. Field work at the marine station Östergarnholm will be one part of the work. Previous experience of meteorological field work, as well as programming and numerical methods is considered a merit. The applicant must be prepared to conduct field work in demanding conditions.
Application: The application should include a statement of research interest, CV/resume, verified list of course grades and contact details for reference persons. If available, a Master thesis and letters of recommendation can also be attached.
Position: The holder of a Ph.D.-student position shall primarily devote her/his time to own research studies. Other departmental work, such as educational or administrative can be part of position (max 20%). The applicant must be eligible for Ph.D. studies. Priority is given to those who are deemed to show the greatest aptitude for a successful completion of graduate studies.
