Uppsala Antibiotic Center (UAC) was announced in 2015 to bring together, stimulate and support research addressing important questions regarding antibiotic resistance from all three disciplinary domains at UU: Medicine and Pharmacy, Science and Technology and Humanities and Social sciences. UAC is now advertising 14 PhD positions. The present position is located at the Department of Cell and Molecular Biology (ICM), one of the most broad and distinguished biomolecular departments in Europe, www.icm.uu.se
Project summary: Metronidazole (MTZ) or 5-nitroimidazole is a unique antimicrobial agent since it is active against both bacterial and parasitic organisms but resistance is an emerging problem. Currently very little is known about the details of this and it has limited the ability to diagnose this type of resistance. In this project we will use a comparative systems biology approach to try to identify the resistance mechanisms, We will select resistant mutants in vitro and they will be studied with genome sequencing, transcriptomics, proteomics and metabolomics. Monte Carlo feature selection and supervised machine learning approaches will be used in order to uncover combinations of the interacting features
Duties and eligibility: Excellent and motivated candidates with an academic degree at the Masters level in Microbiology or Infection Biology or Engineering degree in Molecular Biotechnology are invited to apply for this position. Knowledge about experimental work with large omics data sets is a merit. An excellent knowledge of spoken and written English is an absolute requirement.
Appointment as a graduate student requires that the holder is admitted or will be admitted to postgraduate studies, where the degree of the applicant’s ability to successfully complete the doctoral studies will be decisive. Note that other duties related to teaching and administrative work is included within the scope of the PhD-position (maximum 20%).
