Senior Lecturer in Assyriology

Research and teaching at the Department of linguistics and philology covers approx. twenty different languages and linguistic subjects as well as computational linguistics. These include many of the important languages and cultures in the Middle East, to which can be added Hindi, Swahili, Chinese, Ancient Greek and Latin. Comparative Indo-European linguistics and general linguistics are also part of the department.
Duties: The duties of the position include teaching Akkadian and Sumerian, Near Eastern history and cultural history, research, and administration. In teaching duties are included teaching at the undergraduate level, course responsibility, course administration and supervisory duties for students on the BA level.
Eligibility: An applicant is eligible for employment as Senior Lecturer if s/he has completed a doctorate at the time of employment, or possesses equivalent academic qualifications, has demonstrated good teaching ability and has the personal capabilities required to carry out the duties of the position well. Documented research competence within the subject of Assyriology is a prerequisite for this employment.
A condition for the determination that the applicant has the necessary pedagogical expertise is that s/he has completed relevant tertiarylevel teacher training comprising at least ten weeks, or that s/he in some other way has acquired equivalent proficiency.
Documented ability to teach in a Scandinavian language and good knowledge about spoken and written Swedish is a prerequisite for this employment.
Assessment criteria: Equal care will be devoted to reviewing research and teaching expertise.
When assessing the applicants’ research expertise, emphasis will be placed primarily on research merits in treatments of original sources in the cuneiform languages, mainly Akkadian, and on the ability to place the sources in their historical and cultural-historical context. Other important qualifications include successful applications for external funding for research within Assyriology, Near Eastern Archaeology or Near Eastern history/cultural history.
The successful applicant is expected to participate in the research project Memories for Life: Materiality and Memory of Ancient Near Eastern Inscribed Private Objects. Assessment of teaching expertise takes into account planning, execution and evaluation of teaching, supervisory duties, and examination, and will be given equal weight as the assessment of research expertise. The applicants’ teaching expertise must be sufficiently well documented to enable assessment of quality.
Experience of collaboration with the community at large will be considered a merit.
Assessment criteria, other expertise: Administrative expertise will be given weight.
Administrative expertise is shown through the ability to plan, organise and prioritise the work efficiently and appropriately, and also through the ability to specify and adhere to time limits.
Personal circumstances (such as parental leave) pertinent and beneficial to the evaluation of the applicants’ qualifications should be included in the description of their merits.
