The Department of Physics and Astronomy is the second largest at Uppsala University with more than 250 employees and 10 different divisions and is situated at Ångström Laboratory in Uppsala. The Department was formed in January 2010 by merging the former Department of Physics and Astronomy with the Department of Physics and Materials Science.

The PhD will be part of the Division Materials Physics at the Department of Physics and Astronomy of Uppsala University. Our research focuses on non-equilibrium and finite size effects in magnetic materials, metal hydrides, liquids and polymers. The primary tools to this end involve the use, and development, of advanced neutron and x-ray scattering methods, available at international large-scale facilities around the world, as well as ion beam, optical and transport measurements. This is often combined with theoretical modeling in collaboration with research colleagues from, e.g. material theory.
Complex liquids have unique flow properties, displaying behaviors between classical solids and liquids due to their broad distribution of relaxation times. The viscoelastic properties can generally be connected to the microscopic picture of the structure and dynamics of the constituents. On the microscopic scale this information can be addressed by scattering methods and changes in the structure under shear have been investigated intensively in the past. However experiments addressing the dynamics of complex liquids under shear are very scarce and even the structure of very high molecular mass polymer melts is not well understood since the Weissenberg effect prevents rheological experiments in a simple Couette geometry. Recently we have designed a closed shear device specifically to fill both these gaps and performed first successful test experiments.
The PhD will continue the research in this direction and investigate the topological interactions in highly entangled polymers under shear load systematically and in detail. The experimental results, mainly obtained from neutron small angle scattering and spin echo experiments, will be compared to theoretical expansions of the reptation model, like convective constrain release, as well as computer simulations recently performed in the group.
The position is funded for four years by the Swedish Research Council.
Applicants must hold a master in Physics, Chemistry, Materials Science or a similar area of science. We are looking for a highly motivated, flexible and personally matured candidate with good communication skills. Excellent experimental skills are indispensable. A background in neutron scattering methods is an advantage. Good computer skills and a solid background in condensed matter physics and mathematics are further merits. Excellent knowledge of English, writing and speaking, is required.
