Duties/Project description: We are seeking a PhD student with a strong background in bioinformatics, molecular phylogeny and biochemistry or protein structure. The aim of the project is to analyse evolutionary patterns in protein sequence, structure, and function. The project requires developing a comprehensive data base of protein homologs and analysing these data using established and novel statistical methods. The work will require the development of new analytical models and methods, including structure-aware comparative genomic methods.
Requirements: The project requires strong bioinformatics and statistical skills including phylogenetic theory and practice and a comprehensive background in biochemistry and protein structure. Some wet lab experience would also be useful. The applicant should have a strong academic record and a Master of Science degree in Bioinformatics or equivalent. Strong programming skills and experience in working with protein sequence and structure are highly desirable. The project will require an independent and dedicated person, proficient in both written and spoken English. She/he should be able to work well as part of a team but also independently and have excellent communication and reporting skills.

The PhD-student position is a 4-year appointment, and the candidate will primarily devote the time to his/her own research studies. Other departmental work, such as teaching or administration can be part of the position (maximum 20 %). Salary placement is in accordance with local guidelines at Uppsala University. The applicant must be eligible for PhD studies at Uppsala University.
