Department of Chemistry - Ångström Laboratory conducts research and education in chemistry. The Department has over 300 active persons, of which 200 are employees and the rest consists of guest researchers and students doing research at Master level. We are looking for a postdoctoral researcher to join the group of Assoc. Prof. Henrik Ottosson, one of five research groups within the Synthetic Molecular Chemistry (SMC) unit at Chemistry – Ångström. The SMC unit is a newly started unit that carries out research at the interface between molecular inorganic chemistry and organic chemistry, and with physical chemistry as a significant component.
Research in the Ottosson group is devoted to organosilicon chemistry and to organic photochemistry, with special focus on applications of aromaticity and antiaromaticity effects in electronically excited states as given by Baird’s rule (see Chem. Rev. 2014, 114, 5379). The group carries out both experimental and computational research, and has an extensive network of collaborations, primarily with other academic groups but recently also with industry. Research on Baird’s rule on excited state aromaticity and antiaromaticity has historically been of fundamental character, yet, the ambition of the Ottosson group is to use it as a tool in the development of new chemistry and connected applications.
Project: The postdoctoral researcher will work on a project aiming at developing photochemical coupling reactions, exploiting the excited state (anti)aromaticity concept, that lead from small gaseous hydrocarbons to larger liquid hydrocarbons. Research will be extensively devoted to reaction optimization, with particular focus on finding conditions that give hydrocarbons with variously well-defined sizes in high yields. The project also involves the development of a photochemical reactor that can enable liquid hydrocarbon production at larger scale than the laboratory scale. The project is multidisciplinary and there will, at times, be close collaborations with researchers in microbial chemistry.
Qualifications: The applicant must at the appointed starting date have a PhD in organic photochemistry, radical chemistry, or a related area within experimental physical organic chemistry. Additional experience and/or interest in chemical reactor design and engineering will be beneficial. Large emphasis will be placed on personal qualities; we are looking for a person with good collaboration and communication skills, who is able to work efficiently and independently. Excellent knowledge in English, both written and oral, is a must. For employment as postdoc, the applicant should have a PhD exam or an international equivalent within a maximum of three years before the final application date. During certain circumstances, an earlier PhD can be acceptable.
