Uppsala University is a comprehensive research-intensive university with a strong international standing. Our mission is to pursue top-quality research and education and to interact constructively with society. Our most important assets are all the individuals whose curiosity and dedication make Uppsala University one of Sweden’s most exciting workplaces. Uppsala University has 42,000 students, 7,000 employees and a turnover of SEK 6.7 billion.
The Department of Earth Sciences conducts broad research and training in many areas of geoscience in an expansive, international environment. Today we have about 200 employees from more than 30 countries. The geophysics unit consists today of about 60 researchers.
Duties/Project description: A four year PhD position is available. The position will commence as soon as possible but after agreement with the successful candidate. This opening is financed as part of a major Government sponsored national strategic research initiative aimed at developing new energy solutions. The focus of this position is on studies of geothermal energy using geophysical methods. The Uppsala group has very active ongoing collaborative research activities with Iceland, as well as interests in geothermal energy in Sweden. The detailed direction of the new student’s research will be defined in discussion with the student. Possible appropriate directions include the assessment of the potential for, and practicalities of, the extraction of shallow and deep geothermal energy in Sweden and Iceland, and heat storage potential. Relevant tools may include high-resolution structural mapping and analysis of induced seismicity.
Requirements: We are looking for a candidate with a strong background in geophysics or a similar subject. For employment the candidate should preferably hold an MSc degree or equivalent, preferably in a field relevant for the topic of the PhD position. The applicant must be eligible for PhD studies. Priority is given to those who are deemed to show the greatest aptitude for a successful completion of graduate studies.
Position: The holder of a PhD-student position shall primarily devote her/his time to own research studies. The graduate program covers four years of full-time study. The position can be combined with teaching or other duties at the department (maximum 20%), which prolongs the employment with the corresponding time.
Application: The application should include 1) a letter describing yourself, your research interests, why you want to do a PhD and why you are suitable for the current position, 2) a CV 3), a short description of your education, 4) an authorized copy of your Master’s degree and course grades, 5) the names and email addresses of at least two referees, 6) relevant publications including Master’s thesis.
