PhD student position in the subject Engineering Science with specialization in Electronics at the Ångström Laboratory, Department of Engineering Sciences, Division of Solid State Electronics. Starting date fall 2017 or according to agreement.
Renewable energy sources are important to build a lasting modern society, and photovoltaics is one of the fastest growing technologies of today. Solar cells made from the semiconductor compound Cu(In,Ga)Se2 (CIGS) are under continuous development, both in research and in industry, with a highest achieved efficiency of 22.6 %. CIGS solar cells are so-called thin film solar cells that consist of several thin layers, grown by different techniques, on support materials such as glass. To further increase the knowledge in the field of CIGS solar cells, extensive research is performed at the Ångström Laboratory. The purpose of this PhD project is to develop a CIGS solar cell with high bandgap for application as the uppermost solar cell in a tandem device. In tandem cells, a structure with two materials of different bandgaps is used to increase light absorption and thereby improve the efficiency. There are many requirements that need to be met in order to produce a well-functioning top cell. It should have high efficiency and be transparent to light with low energy. At the same time, new transparent and temperature-stable contact materials must be developed. The project builds on the research group's recently published world record of 11.9% for a CuGaSe2 solar cell with a band gap of 1.7 eV. The work includes fabrication of thin films and complete solar cell devices in the Ångström Laboratory cleanroom together with extensive characterization of material properties.
The thin film solar cell research group currently consists of around 25 senior researchers, post-docs, PhD students and 1 research engineer.
The successful candidate should have a Master of Science in materials science, materials chemistry, engineering physics or equivalent. Previous laboratory experience in the area of thin film synthesis is considered a merit. Strong collaborative spirit and good communication skills in oral and written English are required.
The PhD position is for four years, extendable to a maximum of five years, including departmental duties at a level of at most 20% (typically teaching).
