Sort on published: 2017-09-27
Uppsala University is a comprehensive research-intensive university with a strong international standing. Our mission is to pursue top-quality research and education and to interact constructively with society. Our most important assets are all the individuals whose curiosity and dedication make Uppsala University one of Sweden’s most exciting workplaces. Uppsala University has 42,000 students, 7,000 employees and a turnover of SEK 6.7 billion.
The research group of Molecular Geriatrics is located at the Department of Public Health and Caring Sciences at Rudbeck Laboratory and is closely linked to the memory clinic at the Uppsala University Hospital. Our research is focused on protein aggregation in Parkinson's disease, Alzheimer's disease and other dementia disorders. The research is conducted in collaboration with other research groups internationally and in Sweden, as well as with various pharmaceutical companies.
Description of the position
Parkinson's disease is one of our most common neurodegenerative diseases and cause great suffering for both patients and families. In Parkinson's disease, nerve cells that produce neurotransmitters such as dopamine are degenerating, which ultimately leads to symptoms such as stiffness, slow movements and tremor. Lewy bodies can be found in surviving neurons in affected parts of the brain. These protein aggregates consist of misfolded forms of the presynaptic protein alpha-synuclein. Currently, there is no treatment against the central pathophysiology of Parkinson's disease and mainly dopamine replacement therapies are available.
The project will primarily be focused on in vitro and in vivo studies on the mechanisms explaining how alpha-synuclein aggregates cause an imbalance of neurotransmitter levels in the brain.
The PhD student should primarily focus on his/her own research studies. Other departmental work, including teaching and administrative work, can also be part of the position (maximum 20%).
We welcome applications from highly motivated candidates that already have, or who expect to soon have, a Master of Science degree. The applicant also needs to have a good knowledge of written and spoken English.
Experience of working with cellular model systems for Parkinson's disease is an advantage, as well as previous studies on alpha-synuclein and/or other proteins involved in neurotransmitter release. It is also desirable that applicants already are familiar with the following techniques: immunohistochemistry, immunocytochemistry, Western blotting, fluorescence and light microscopy.
The application should be written in English and include a cover letter in which you briefly describe yourself and your research interests, a CV as well as copies of diplomas and certificates. Contact details to at least two referees should be included.
The selection of candidates will be performed according to the following criteria: fulfillment of the eligibility requirements, personal suitability, previous work experience and / or research in the related field. The supervisors, together with the department’s research education group, will make the final selection. The Medicine and Pharmacy Research Education Committee is the body that formally accepts the student.
