Project description and duties:
The PhD student will be trained within the SSF (Swedish Foundation for Strategic Research) funded project “Host-pathogen interactions relying on short linear motifs", which is an ambitious multidisciplinary project with four national collaborators in Uppsala (Ylva Ivarsson, Per Jemth, Sara Lind and Ola Söderberg), one in England (Evangelia Petsalaki) and one in Ireland (Norman Davey). In this project we will identify new host-pathogen protein interactions and investigate with range of approaches.
The advertised position is available in Per Jemth's group at the Department of Medical Biochemistry and Microbiology (IMBIM). Per Jemth leads a protein engineering and biophysics group with special focus on evolution and mechanisms of intrinsically disordered proteins. The successful candidate must:
- hold a Master’s degree in biochemistry, biophysics or related areas prior to the starting date
- be fluent in English and have excellent communication skills
Formal requirements from the funder:
The position is available for a four-year period for applicants holding a relevant master´s degree.

The PhD students are expected to be affiliated to the graduate programme in Medical Biochemistry. Other duties at the institution comprising administration and teaching may be included in the position at a maximum level of 20 %. Salary is subject to established local guidelines. The length of the study period for full time employment is a maximum of four years. Your key tasks as a PhD fellow are to:
- manage and carry out your research project
- take relevant PhD courses
- write scientific articles and your PhD thesis
- participate in national and international congresses and scientific meetings
- teach and disseminate your research
Criteria for ranking:
We are looking for a PhD candidate with excellent track record and training in biochemical and biophysical techniques and experience of protein expression and purification. Experience of bioinformatics, complementary biochemical, biophysical or cell biological techniques would be an advantage. The project involves extensive collaboration within the international and multidisciplinary project and interpersonal skills are therefore essential. In ranking qualified applicants, scientific excellence will be considered particularly important.
