The Department of Information Technology conducts research and education in a spectrum of areas within Computer Science and Information Technology. The research is organized in five Divisions, and the Division of Visual Information and Interaction houses the Centre for Image Analysis, which has a long tradition of theoretical and applied research and graduate education in computerized image analysis and scientific visualization. The focus is on image processing as such, but also on developing better methods, algorithms and systems for applications within primarily life sciences, medicine, and digital humanities. Research project: This postdoctoral position is part of a recently started 5-year project and which is funded by the Swedish Foundation for Strategic Research (SSF). The project is about understanding cell migration; a complex cellular process highly relevant to cancer. We will collect data and build models for single living cells in 4 dimensions; 3D-space and time, and apply a broad systems microscopy strategy by combining recently developed quantitative imaging and statistical modelling with emerging single cell omics. The project is a close multidisciplinary collaboration of leading experts from cell migration and microscopy (Staffan Strömblad, Karolinska Institutet), molecular tools (Ulf Landegren, Uppsala University), digital image processing and analysis (Carolina Wählby, Uppsala University), and two companies; Olink Biosciences and Sprint Biosciences.
We are currently seeking to fill the role of an expert in computerized image processing and analysis responsible for creating an automated approach for classifying cells based on their dynamic behaviour in time series of microscopy images. The candidate will be expected to collaborate closely with the project partners and be involved in supervision of PhD and MSc students. Tasks include development of approaches for analysis of large-scale 4D microscopy image data, and methods will range from learning-based image segmentation and classification to large-scale statistical analysis.
Duties: The position is focused on research but may include up to 5 % teaching (in English or Swedish), depending on availability and the candidate's career interest, as well as departmental duties, up to 5 %.
Qualifications: To qualify for the position of postdoc, you must have a doctoral degree, or an exam which is judged comparable to a Swedish Ph.D., in computerized image processing and analysis or a similar field, combined with documented experience from large-scale processing and analysis of image data. To be eligible for a position as postdoctoral researcher the applicant's Ph.D. exam must have been obtained no more than three years prior to the application deadline; however, periods of sick leave, parental leave, or similar are deducted from the three-year period. Experience from working with microscopy data and life science applications is highly valued; especially experience from time-lapse and 3D image analysis. Excellent skills in spoken and written English are required.
Assessment criteria: The ranking of eligible applicants will be based primarily on research expertise relevant for the project; research experience in computerized image analysis, large-scale data processing and analysis, scientific data management and machine learning. High-quality publications as principal author in international peer-reviewed journals or conferences are expected. Documented programming skills are of particular importance, as well as successful teamwork and organizational skills. As the project is focused on microscopy data and life science applications, experience and/or strong interest from this field is considered meriting.
