Sort on published: 2017-11-02
Uppsala University is a comprehensive research-intensive university with a strong international standing. Our mission is to pursue top-quality research and education and to interact constructively with society. Our most important assets are all the individuals whose curiosity and dedication make Uppsala University one of Sweden’s most exciting workplaces. Uppsala University has 42,000 students, 7,000 employees and a turnover of SEK 6.7 billion.
We are searching for a postdoctoral fellow that will conduct research within two separate research projects. The first project – Contexts, Networks and Participation: The Social Logic of Political Engagement (CONPOL) – is funded by a five-year consolidator grant from the European Research Council. The purpose of the project is to increase knowledge of what explains differences in political participation between individuals. More specifically we intend to focus on how the decisions of individuals to become involved in politics are shaped in social contexts. A full description of the project can be found at the following link:
The second project – Leveraging New Technologies to Advance Social-Science Genomics – is funded by a four-year grant from Ragnar Söderberg Foundation. The purpose of this project is to study how social, economic and political attitudes and behaviors are shaped by genetic factors. A brief description of the project can be found here:
The successful candidate is expected to conduct research with a focus on one or several of the main questions of the two projects.
Both projects are integrated in the Department of Government at Uppsala University. Uppsala University was founded in 1477 and is ranked among the world’s top 100 universities in the three largest international rankings. The University has 41,000 students and 6,900 staff.
At the Department of Government in Uppsala we have been conducting research and educating students for nearly 400 years. Today the department provides a vibrant and internationally successful research environment. With 50 faculty members and 40 PhD-students, the department is recognized as one of the leading political science departments in the Nordic countries.
The position involves individual research (80%) and teaching at all levels (20%).
Qualifications and assessment
Applicants who have a PhD degree, or a corresponding international degree, in Political Science, Economics, Sociology, Psychology or related fields are eligible for the positions. The PhD is to have been obtained within the past three (3) years at the date of appointment. Exceptions can be made under special circumstances. Such circumstances include leave due to illness, parental leave, or trade union assignments etc.
The basis for assessment is the ability to develop and conduct high quality research. Greater emphasis is put on the quality rather than the quantity of previous research. The applicants must be able to demonstrate documented research expertise through the quality of their doctoral thesis and other publications.
We are especially interested in applicants with a thorough background in quantitative methods. Previous experience with and knowledge in behavior genetics methods is also an asset. Finally, high proficiency in oral and written English is required.
The application must include the following:
- Copies of degree certificate
- List of publications
- Two (2) representative publications (of which only one may be a monograph or a compilation thesis)
- Contact information for two (2) references
