Uppsala University is a comprehensive research-intensive university with a strong international standing. Our mission is to pursue top-quality research and education and to interact constructively with society. Our most important assets are all the individuals whose curiosity and dedication make Uppsala University one of Sweden’s most exciting workplaces. Uppsala University has 42,000 students, 7,000 employees and a turnover of SEK 6.7 billion.
The Department of Pharmacy at Uppsala University is devoted to research and teaching related to the development, manufacturing and use of pharmaceuticals. The Department is internationally recognized for its research on drug delivery and pharmaceutical formulation. The department is located at campus BMC, a multidisciplinary research and teaching center at Uppsala University. The research is developed by five research groups, for an overview of the profiles of the research groups, go to www.farmfak.uu.se/farm/.
The Department of Pharmacy is also the academic hub of a recently established joint academic/industry collaborative initiative, the Swedish Drug Delivery Forum (SDDF), with ten industrial partners and financially supported by Vinnova (Sweden´s Innovation Agency). The aim of the forum is to develop a world leading research milieu within the field of Drug Delivery. Especially within the areas of parenteral, oral and pulmonary drug delivery results to the benefit of the patient in terms of therapeutic effect and safety is to be expected. The forum will also improve the competence supply in drug delivery science to the benefit of the Swedish life science-sector. The science program of the SDDF is now under development and we are eagerly seeking highly talented and motivated coworkers to help us build a flourishing research milieu and a strong research program.
Uppsala University hereby declares one Postdoctoral position within the science program of the Swedish Drug Delivery Forum open for applications within the following project:
Drug release and absorption in colon: A large fraction of compounds under development are poorly soluble with dissolution rate limited absorption and as a consequence, low or erratic bioavailability. While modified release (MR) formulations have been successfully designed for releasing highly soluble compounds in the colon, these systems have been proven demanding to design for poorly soluble compounds. In part this is attributed to the limited fluid available in the colon, but also other properties, such as the thickness and structure of mucus, the peristalsis in the colon and the role of the microbiome are influencing the absorption profile from colon. To date we are still missing in vitro models that are in vivo predictive for release and absorption from this part of the intestine. This project aims at developing physiologically relevant in silico and in vitro models based on mechanistic studies in vivo; models that will improve our understanding of how to design successful dosage forms for efficient colonic release and absorption.
Qualifications: To be eligible for the postdoctoral employment, the candidate must hold a PhD degree in a subject that is relevant for the project acquired no more than three years prior to the application deadline. Further, the post doc is expected to successfully perform high quality research, publish the results, and independently perform the tasks included in the project. She or he is also expected to contribute to other projects performed within the forum and at the department.
How to apply: The application should contain a letter in which the applicant describes her- or himself, motivates why she or he has applied for the position, states relevant qualifications and indicates research interests and plans for the future. It must contain a CV including name and contact details for at least two references, copies of relevant certificates, degrees and grades, and a list of previous research publications of relevance, including the applicant's doctoral thesis. Periods of leave, such as parental leave, that may be taken into account should be stated in the presentation of personal experience and qualifications. Salary will be set after competence and we would like the applicant to provide an expected salary in the application.
