Uppsala University is a comprehensive research-intensive university with a strong international standing. Our mission is to pursue top-quality research and education and to interact constructively with society. Our most important assets are all the individuals whose curiosity and dedication make Uppsala University one of Sweden’s most exciting workplaces. Uppsala University has 40,000 students, 7,000 employees and a turnover of SEK 6.5 billion.
In the EMBLA research group, we develop novel approaches in microfabrication and integrate our systems with microfluidics to develop new experimental platforms for visualisation and characterisation of cells to learn more about the human biology. EMBLA is part of the Division of Microsystems Technology (MST), Department of Engineering Sciences and is located at the Ångström Laboratory. There are currently 15 people in the research group and we are now looking to recruit a PhD student to join one of our research projects.
More information on the research group's profile is available in the website:
Biomaterials are a promising option to replace or regenerate injured bone tissue. They can increase the quality of life of some patients, but before reaching the market they must be tested in pre-clinical and clinical assays to ensure their safety and benefits. It is common to initially test the biological properties of biomaterials using cell culture methods. However, the results obtained from studies with cells have a poor correlation with the response observed when biomaterials are implanted in the body.
Our research project aims to develop a new methodology to integrate and test the biological properties of biomaterials in a chip, which is expected to more closely mimic the physiological conditions.
The appointment is for four years. If departmental duties (maximum of 20 percent) are included in the position, an extension of maximum one year may be granted. Additional information is available at http://www.teknat.uu.se and http://teknik.uu.se
We are looking for a creative and highly motivated candidate who, at the agreed start date, will have completed an undergraduate degree at Master’s level or equivalent (e.g. Civilingenjör), with specialization in materials engineering, biotechnology or in another appropriate discipline. Experience in microfabrication, biomaterials and cell culture would be advantageous.
Great importance is given to the candidate’s personal qualifications. We are looking for a pro-active person with the ability to work independently as well as to function well in collaborations. It is also important that the candidate has enthusiasm for the doctoral program and is motivated to learn new methods and technologies.
