PhD position in Microbiology – Infection biology of Giardia intestinalis at the Department of Cell and Molecular Biology/Microbiology program.
The Department of Cell and Molecular Biology is organized into six major programs with a total of 220 employees. Research at the department is focused on understanding how living organisms function at the cellular level. The PhD position is placed in Staffan Svärd’s research group at the Microbiology program.
Project description: Within the PhD project we will investigate how the intestinal parasite Giardia intestinalis interacts with host cells and cause disease. This will be done in different in vitro and in vivo systems. In the project gene modifications using CRISPR-Cas will be developed. The methods applied within this PhD project include high-throughput sequencing of DNA and RNA followed by computational analysis of the generated data, cell culturing, flow cytometry, fluorescence microscopy, as well as other molecular and cell biology techniques.
Duties: Research in the project and teaching up to 20%.
Requirements: Master degree in Infection biology or equivalent. Basic knowledge in programming is an advantage. Also, hands-on experience in parasitic infection of cells and CRISPR-related methods is desired. Strong written and oral communication skills are required. Assessment of personal suitability will be an important aspect in the selection.
