Duties/Project description: Applications are invited for a fully-funded PhD student position in stellar and planetary astrophysics, under the supervision of Ulrike Heiter och Oleg Kochukhov. The PhD project is expected to focus on the study of high-resolution spectra of cool stars (M dwarfs) with and without planets at infrared wavelengths. The work will be done in preparation of the future PLATO mission by ESA, which aims at the detection of terrestrial exoplanets from photometric transits. The project is expected to involve both data analysis and numerical modelling. The starting date is September 1, 2018 or as mutually agreed. The position as PhD student is limited to four years of full-time studies, or up to five years if departmental work (teaching or administration) is included.
Requirements: This position requires a university degree in Astronomy or Physics at an advanced level (e.g. a MSc degree) completed by the time of employment. Good oral and written proficiency in English is a requirement as well as the capacity to work both independently and in a team.

Employment conditions: The PhD student position is a 4-year appointment, and the candidate will primarily devote the time to her/his own research studies. Extension, up to a maximum of five years, is possible by including department duties at a level of at most 20%, typically teaching. The position is fully financed and the salary is in accordance with local guidelines at Uppsala University.
