In the subject Engineering Science with specialization in the Science of Electricity, at the Department of Engineering Sciences, Division of Electricity. Starting date is spring/summer 2018.
One of the largest challenges of today is how to provide the energy demand of the society with fossil free and renewable energy sources, and this requires that renewable energy technologies need to be developed and utilized. The Division of Electricity represents one of Sweden’s leading research groups in renewable electric energy conversion, and conducts world leading research in wind, wave, tidal and hydropower.
The project is part of the Centre of Natural Hazards and Disaster Science (CNDS), a national research framework that aims to improve the ability to prevent and deal with risks in society by raising awareness of the dynamics and consequences of natural hazards. Collaboration and dialogue within the CNDS framework will provide an interdisciplinary platform to share and gain expertize within disaster risk reduction.
This PhD project will focus on sustainability and survivability of marine structures with focus on offshore renewable energy systems, in particular wave energy. The project aims to study the impact of ocean waves on the survivability of marine structures, and develop methods for risk analysis and risk reduction. Survivability in tsunamis and extreme waves will be a main topic, and the results will be used to provide guidelines for risk reduction of offshore renewable energy installations. We offer a varied and exciting work that is designed by the PhD candidates together with the research team.
The PhD position is for four years, extendable to a maximum of five years including departmental duties at a level of at most 20% (typically teaching).
Local guidelines for salary placement are used.
We are seeking a candidate with a MSc in engineering or science, preferably with focus on numerical modelling and offshore engineering. A strong motivation and ability to work independently is desirable, and good verbal and written skills in English are required. Programming skills will be considered as merits.
