The Department of Chemistry – Ångström Laboratory has about 200 employees and conducts successful research in several areas with a large part of external funding. The department is also responsible for teaching within a number of educational programs on first and second cycle level (Bachelor, Masters, Engineering). The Physical Chemistry program undertakes fundamental and goal oriented research with focus placed on photochemistry and chemical dynamics, laser spectroscopy as well as molecular and mesoscopic systems for solar energy conversion (see our website). Researchers in the Physical Chemistry program are part of a cross-disciplinary collaboration project in the Consortium for Artificial Photosynthesis.
Project description: This multi-disciplinary PhD project is directed towards the development hybrid inorganic-protein photocatalysts, which will involve: protein engineering and characterization, inorganic coordination chemistry, and steady state and time-resolved photophysical studies. The project operates within the framework of the large collaborative project on Artificial Photosynthesis, which involves ca. 80 researchers at several Swedish universities. Additionally the project presents the opportunity to collaborate with researchers at a top research university in the United States.
Qualifications required: To be eligible for a PhD position, the applicant must hold a University degree in natural sciences or equivalent, with a focus on physical chemistry, inorganic chemistry, biochemistry, or other relevant subjects. Candidates should be highly motivated and have the ability to work both independently and as part of a team. The applicant must be proficient in spoken and written English.
Position: The postgraduate training comprises four years of full time studies. The position can be combined with up to 20 % of teaching assistantship, which will then prolong the position accordingly. More information about postgraduate studies at Uppsala University is available at our website.

How to apply: The application should be written in English and should include a letter of intention (max 2 pages) with a short description of the applicant, motivation for conducting PhD studies in the area, research interest and previous research experience. The application should further include a CV, authorized copies of degrees, transcripts of academic records, a copy of the BSc/ MSc thesis, relevant publications and contact information for at least two reference persons.

Salary: According to local agreement for PhD students and teaching assistants.
