Uppsala University is a comprehensive research-intensive university with a strong international standing. Our mission is to pursue top-quality research and education and to interact constructively with society. Our most important assets are all the individuals whose curiosity and dedication make Uppsala University one of Sweden’s most exciting workplaces. Uppsala University has 42,000 students, 7,000 employees and a turnover of SEK 6.7 billion.
At the Division of Electricity, Department of Engineering Sciences, Ångström Laboratory.
Starting date is spring/summer 2018
One of the largest challenges of today is how to provide the energy demand of the society with fossil free and renewable energy sources, and this requires that renewable energy technologies need to be developed and utilized. The Division of Electricity represents one of Sweden’s leading research groups in renewable electric energy conversion, and conducts world leading research in wind, wave, tidal and hydropower.
The project is a part of Swegrid (Swedish Centre for Smart Grids and Energy Storage). Collaboration and dialogue within Swegrid will provide an interdisciplinary platform between university and industry to share expertise within renewable energy, power systems and energy storage.
The PhD project will focus on converter solutions (rectifiers and inverters) for a wave power system. The project will be carried out in close collaboration with Seabased Industry AB. It will include simulations, numerical calculations as well as experimental work. Within the project, the inverter's ability to control power to the network and its ability to meet the network requirements will be studied. The project will also include a study on how smart technology in the network can be used to control the inverter to provide different flexibility features. The studies on active rectifiers will focus on analyzing the possibilities of controlling the power from a wave power plant using an active rectifier. The PhD student will build on previously done work within the group and will carry out the project in close collaboration with the supervisor, reference group and other members of the research group at the Division for Electricity.
We are seeking a candidate with a MSc in engineering or science, preferably with focus on power electronics. A strong motivation and ability to work independently is desirable, and good verbal and written skills in English and Swedish are required.
The PhD position is for four years, extendable to a maximum of five years including departmental duties at a level of at most 20% (typically teaching). Local guidelines for salary placement are used.
Applications should include a brief description of research interests and relevant experience, a CV, copies of diplomas and certificates, thesis (or a draft thereof) and other relevant documents. The candidates are encouraged to provide letter(s) of recommendation and contact information to reference persons.
