Type of position: Junior lecturer, Fixed-term substitute appointment from 01/08/2018 to 31/01/2019, with the possibility of extension.
Duties: Teaching and examination in Celtic Languages, literature, and history at the undergraduate level, both on campus and online. Other duties may include the teaching of Academic Writing in English. Teaching duties include examination, course coordination and course administration. Administration duties are included in this post. These may include temporary subject responsibility for the Celtic Section. The position includes a 10% research allocation. Responsibilities also include following developments in the subject area and in society that are of relevance to university employment. In order to actively participate in Department and Faculty work, the folder of the position will be assumed to be present at the workplace regularly.
Eligibility: To be eligible for appointment as a junior lecturer, a university-level degree with a specialization in a Celtic language, or equivalent, is required. The appointee will also have completed training in the pedagogy of Higher Education, or have acquired equivalent pedagogical skills through other means, as well as have the teaching skills and other qualities required to fulfil the requirements of the position well.
The ability to teach in English is a requirement. A further requirement is the ability to express oneself orally and in writing in Modern Irish (minimum C1 level according to the CEFR).
Assessment criteria: A Master’s level degree in a Celtic language will be an advantage in the assessment of applications for this position, as well as documented experience of teaching at university level. In ranking of eligible applicants, weight will be accorded to teaching and research competence. Teaching and research qualifications must be in the field of Celtic Languages.
In the ranking of eligible applicants, special weight will be accorded to teaching competence in Celtic languages, and to previous experience of delivering online courses. This should include documented ability to deliver, assess and revise courses; as well as experience in setting and marking students’ work. Ability to teach Old Irish language is of particular merit. Attention will be given to the quality of teaching; teaching skills must be documented in a manner that allows their quality to be assessed. In the evaluation of pedagogical ability, documented previous experience of delivering web-based courses in Celtic languages will be given special weight.
Previous experience of teaching academic writing skills in English, or the ability to teach Welsh are also advantageous.
Research qualifications in the field of Celtic Languages will also be assessed. The ability to initiate and conduct original research that may contribute to the ongoing research at the Celtic Section and the Department of English is an advantage.
Good interpersonal skills and a documented ability to cooperate with colleagues is very important. Previous experience of administration will be afforded weight.
In appointing a person to this academic post, priority will be given to the applicant who, after a holistic assessment of competence and skills, is judged, alongside documented qualifications, to possess the greatest potential for performing and further developing the relevant duties and for advancing the subject area.
