Associate Senior Lecturer in Peptide Pharmaceuticals
Sort on published: 2018-05-09
Uppsala University is a comprehensive research-intensive university with a strong international standing. Our mission is to pursue top-quality research and education and to interact constructively with society. Our most important assets are all the individuals whose curiosity and dedication make Uppsala University one of Sweden’s most exciting workplaces. Uppsala University has 42,000 students, 7,000 employees and a turnover of SEK 6.7 billion.
Research environment: The Faculty of Pharmacy consists of the Department of Pharmacy, the Department of Medicinal Chemistry, and the Department of Pharmaceutical Biosciences. Together, these conduct research and education within broad pharmaceutical areas. More information about the departments and their activities can be found at http://www.farmfak.uu.se/farm/, http://www.ilk.uu.se, and http://farmbio.uu.se. A number of groups perform research on peptide pharmaceuticals, e.g., identification of novel antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory and anticancer peptides, delivery systems for improved administration of peptide drugs, pharmacological aspects, molecular imaging, clinical pharmacokinetics/pharmacodynamics, and peptidomimetics. Uppsala University is also host for one platform for antibiotics development (ENABLE) and one for drug development (SciLifeLab DDD, Medicinal Chemistry – Lead Identification). It furthermore supports other competence platforms, such as Uppsala University Behavioral Facility (UUBF) and Biomolecular Imaging and Proteomics. Together, this makes the Faculty of Pharmacy an interesting environment for research and education on peptide pharmaceuticals.
Description of the subject area: Peptides constitute an area of considerable current interest within pharmaceutical research, since a sizeable number of peptides have been approved as drugs during the last few years. The dramatically increased interest in peptide pharmaceuticals has many reasons, including new tools for peptide design, production, optimization, and conjugation, improved possibilities for analysis of peptides and their interactions in complex biological environments, as well as the development of novel drug delivery systems. Considering the biological relevance of peptides, e.g., as signal peptides, neurotransmittors, hormones, and antimicrobial compounds, peptide research is also of importance within chemical biology and diagnostics, aiming to understand biological mechanisms in both healthy and ill individuals.
In order to facilitate the increasing need of research on peptides within drug development, as well as that within the development of new clinical diagnostics, we are now looking to strengthen the area of peptide pharmaceuticals. Important for this concerted effort is a clear focus on the development and use of peptides as pharmaceuticals. Within this broad area, several different profiles may be relevant for the position, including, e.g., design of novel peptide pharmaceuticals, delivery systems for improved administration, new production systems and analytical methodologies for peptide pharmaceuticals, pharmacology, kinetics, and toxicity, as well as diagnostic aspects of peptide pharmaceuticals.
Duties: Research, teaching and administrative tasks. The primary duty is research, while teaching amounts to maximum 30% of a full-time equivalent. Teaching includes course responsibility and course administration. Teachers are also responsible for keeping abreast of developments within their own subject areas and developments in the wider community that are significant for their teaching roles in higher education. A post as associate senior lecturer aims at providing qualifications for teaching appointments which require higher qualifications.
Period of employment: An associate senior lecturer is to be employed for an indefinite period but no longer than four years. If there are special reasons, the appointment may be renewed. The total period of employment may not, however, exceed six years. An associate senior lecturer has the right to apply for promotion to senior lecturer, at the latest six months before the employment ceases. If the associate senior lecturer is deemed to be suitable for the position and meets the criteria for promotion, he or she shall be promoted and given a permanent position as senior lecturer.
Eligibility requirements: Under the Higher Education Ordinance applicants are eligible for employment as associate senior lecturer if they have obtained a doctoral degree or achieved the equivalent research expertise. Priority should be given to applicants who have obtained their doctoral degree or achieved equivalent competence at the most seven years prior to the end of the application period. As the recruitment process began before 1 April 2018, it comes under former provisions of the Higher Education Ordinance and Uppsala University’s Appointment Regulations.
Under the Appointment regulation for Uppsala University, teaching expertise is required to be eligible for a position as Associate Senior Lecturer. The expertise must have been demonstrated by educational and teaching qualifications. In assessing teaching expertise, teaching quality must be the prime consideration. Consideration shall also be given to scope, including both breadth and depth.
To obtain teaching expertise, the applicant should have participated in teacher training for higher education of relevance to operations at the University, comprising at least five weeks, or be considered to have acquired the equivalent knowledge. If it has not been possible to acquire this qualification prior to employment, qualifying training for teachers in higher education shall be completed during the first two years of employment.
Under the Appointment regulation for Uppsala University, a general eligibility requirement for teachers is that they have the personal characteristics required to perform the duties of the post well.
To be eligible for appointment as a teacher an applicant must have a documented ability to teach in Swedish and/or English.
Assessment criteria; research expertise and teaching expertise: When selecting among eligible applicants weight will primarily be given to research expertise, and thereafter to teaching expertise. Special weight will be attached to the applicant’s potential to contribute to future development of both research and teaching.
Research expertise comprises research merits. In assessing research expertise research quality must be the prime consideration. The scope of research, primarily in regard to depth and breadth, must also be afforded consideration. Furthermore, consideration must be given to the capacity to plan, initiate, lead and develop research and education in the third cycle, the ability to acquire funding for research in competition, as well as the demonstrated capacity to interact with others both within academia and in the wider community.
Teaching expertise comprises educational and teaching qualifications. In assessing teaching expertise teaching quality must be the prime consideration. The scope of teaching experience, in terms of both breadth and depth, must also be afforded consideration. Furthermore, consideration must be given to the capacity to plan, initiate, lead, and develop teaching and instruction, as well as the ability to connect research to teaching in respect to research in the subject at hand, subject didactics, as well as teaching and learning in higher education. The ability to interact concerning issues of teaching and learning in higher education with actors inside and outside the University is also included in teaching expertise.
When the University appoints new teachers those applicants must be selected who, following a qualitative holistic assessment of their competence and expertise, are judged to have the best potential to carry out and develop the relevant duties and to help advance operations.
Assessment criteria; other expertise: Administrative and collaborative expertise is important for the post and will be afforded weight. Attention will also be paid to the ability to collaborate with the wider community and to inform others about research and developmental work.
Administrative expertise is demonstrated, for example, through the capacity to plan, organize, and prioritize work in an efficient and task-related manner as well as through the ability to assign and observe time frames. Expertise includes overall operational planning and the capacity to manage resources in a way that reflects operational priorities as well as the ability to work in a structured manner based on an awareness of goals and quality.
When assessing collaborative expertise, experience with and expertise in education and outreach, editorships and other activities related to knowledge exchange between the university and the surrounding community, as well as experience with innovation and entrepreneurship, shall be of significance.
An applicants’ parental leaves of absence, part-time work for care of children, or the like may come to be considered as qualifying work experience, and should therefore be listed in the application.
