Uppsala University is a comprehensive research-intensive university with a strong international standing. Our mission is to pursue top-quality research and education and to interact constructively with society. Our most important assets are all the individuals whose curiosity and dedication make Uppsala University one of Sweden’s most exciting workplaces. Uppsala University has 44.000 students, 7.100 employees and a turnover of SEK 7 billion.
Department of Chemistry - Ångström Laboratory conducts research and education in chemistry. The Department has over 300 active persons, of which 200 are employees and the rest consists of guest researchers and students doing research at Master level. Annual turnover is just over 200 million SEK. For more information, visit the Chemistry Ångström's website.
About the program: The Borbas group is part of the Department of Chemistry, Ångström Laboratory, within the Chemistry section at Uppsala University. The group is situated in a modern building at the Ångström Laboratory. The research at the Department spans from materials chemistry to physical chemistry, and from biochemistry to molecular biology. Strong cross-disciplinary collaborations are characteristic for the Department.
Research area: Synthetic molecular organic and inorganic chemistry, coordination chemistry, spectroscopy
Duties/Project description: The projects deal with the preparation of molecular catalysts for organic synthesis, especially for photocatalysis. The catalysts are based on photoactive lanthanide complexes. The project has organic, inorganic, organometallic and coordination chemistry aspects; the systems will be characterized using traditional organic as well as electrochemical, photochemical and spectroscopic methods. The project will partly be conducted in collaboration with partners at UU, in Sweden and abroad.
Representative recent publications are: J. Am. Chem. Soc. 2017, 139, 5756 and Inorg. Chem. 2015, 54, 8174.
Requirements: A suitable background is a Master of Science (MSc) degree (or Swedish “Magister” or “Civilingenjör”) in Chemistry, with solid experience in synthetic molecular inorganic and/or organic chemistry, organometallic or coordination chemistry, and an interest in physical chemistry. Previous documented experience in (time-resolved) spectroscopy is advantageous. The ability of the PhD student to be innovative and not afraid to go outside the traditional discipline boundaries is appreciated.
Application: Applications should include a brief description of research interests and relevant experience, a CV, copies of diplomas and certificates, thesis as well as other relevant documents that the applicant wishes to refer to. Contact information regarding at least two reference persons should also be included.
The duration of the PhD studies is four years extendable to a maximum of five years including departmental duties (typically teaching) at a level of at most 20%. Further information here.
