Department of Public Health and Caring Sciences.
The laboratory of Molecular Geriatrics is situated at Rudbeck laboratory and is closely connected to the clinical activity of the memory disorder unit at the University hospital. Our research is focused on cellular and molecular mechanisms of neurodegenerative diseases and is performed in collaboration with national and international research groups.
Alzheimer’s disease is the most common form of age-related neurodegenerative diseases and causes much suffering for the patients and their families. Knowledge about the cellular mechanisms behind the initiation and spreading of AD is still very limited. Decades of research have focused on neuronal abnormalities during the disease progression, but recently more and more attention has been given to glial cells. Being the most numerous glial cell type, astrocytes have great impact on the brain environment and may constitute a potent treatment target. The overall aim with our research is to clarify the involvement of astrocytes in the initiation and progression of the disease and to investigate their therapeutic potential. The project will mostly be focused on studies of advanced cell culture systems, but will also include analyses of patient samples and in vivo work.
We welcome applications from highly motivated candidates who have a Master of Science degree in neurochemistry, biomedicine, biology, biotechnology, pharmaceutical science or equivalent education. Experience of working with advanced cellular model systems for neurodegenerative disease is highly qualifying, as well as experience of culturing astrocytes and neurons. Furthermore, it is desirable that the applicant is familiar with the following techniques: Immunohistochemistry/immunocytochemistry, western blot, ELISA, isolation of extracellular vesicles, fluorescence, time-lapse and electron microscopy. The applicant needs to have a good knowledge in written and spoken English.
The application should contain a letter describing the applicant’s qualifications and research interests, CV, copies of relevant degrees and contact information for at least two references.
The selection of candidates will be performed according to the following criteria: fulfillment of the eligibility requirements, personal suitability, previous work experience and / or research in the related field. The supervisors, together with the department’s research education group, will make the final selection. The Medicine and Pharmacy Research Education Committee is the body that formally accepts the student. Uppsala University aims for gender balance and diversity in all activities in order to achieve a higher quality at all levels of the organization. We therefore welcome applicants of any gender and with different birth background, functionality and life experience.
