Postdoctoral position in numerical many-body quantum physics
Sort on published: 2018-07-05
Uppsala University is a comprehensive research-intensive university with a strong international standing. Our mission is to pursue top-quality research and education and to interact constructively with society. Our most important assets are all the individuals whose curiosity and dedication make Uppsala University one of Sweden’s most exciting workplaces. Uppsala University has 42,000 students, 7,000 employees and a turnover of SEK 6.7 billion.
The theory group of Adrian Kantian at the Department of Physics and Astronomy at Uppsala University invites applications for a postdoctoral position in numerical many-body quantum physics. This position is funded through an ERC Starting Grant on the theory of engineered unconventional and high-temperature superconducting systems with controlled and optimizable properties, by using one-dimensional systems of electrons as building blocks. More background on the project is available at http://materials-theory.physics.uu.se/kantian/
A strong drive for original research, scientific rigour and self-initiative are vital requirements for this position. The successful applicant will enter into a sustained collaboration with the project PI, who is committed to participate fully in this project, and other group members, as well as the PIs wider network of collaborators.
Work in this position will involve substantial use and modification/extension of an existing code implementing the density matrix renormalization group (DMRG). This code has been developed especially for use on distributed-memory parallel supercomputers to solve e.g. models of 2D lattice-fermions, systems with long-range interactions, etc. It has already been applied extensively to these types of problems.
Irrespective of these technical aspects, research in this position will be driven by scientific questions and objectives first and foremost, not technological goals.
Thus, a scientific requirement is a solid background in tensor-network methods such as DMRG, PEPS, or similar.
On the technical side, a high degree of proficiency with C++ and MPI are essential. Knowledge of and experience with template meta-programming with C++ would be very helpful, and experience with HPC systems, multi-threading, CMake and versioning systems would be advantageous.
Prerequisites: The holder of a position as postdoctoral researcher must have a PhD degree or equivalent. The PhD degree must have been obtained at the start of the employment and no more than three years prior to the application deadline; however, periods of e.g. sick leave or parental leave are not counted.
Employment Period: The period of employment is 2 years.
Uppsala University strives to be an inclusive workplace that promotes equal opportunities and attracts qualified candidates who can contribute to the University’s excellence and diversity. We welcome applications from all sections of the community and from people of all backgrounds. The department strives for a more even gender balance in its research and teaching staff. Thus, female applicants are especially encouraged. Sweden has a generous welfare system that includes paid parental leave, affordable daycare and practically free medical care.
Application: The application file should contain a letter describing the applicant and her/his qualifications and research interests. It should contain a CV, copies of relevant degrees, contact information for at least three reference persons, and a full publication list. Personal circumstances that may be of relevance in the evaluation, for example periods of parental leave, should be mentioned in the CV.
Salary: Individually negotiated salary.
Starting date: 15-10-2018 or as otherwise agreed.
