The Department of Physics and Astronomy invites applications for a researcher position to work with radio frequency (RF) physics and technology. The Department of Physics and Astronomy is the second largest department at Uppsala University with more than 360 employees and 11 different divisions, and is situated at the Ångström Laboratory in Uppsala. The department is hosting the FREIA Laboratory, where research towards future particle accelerators is performed, with special focus on the European Spallation Source (ESS), the High Luminosity upgrade of the LHC at CERN and the development of free-electron lasers in Sweden.
The candidate is offered the possibility to work in an exciting modern research area and will have opportunities to interact and collaborate with leading experimental and theoretical groups locally as well as globally.
Description of Subject Area: The candidate will, in collaboration with other members of the FREIA Laboratory, work on the design and development of a advanced accelerators and instrumentation in general, and specifically on the development, construction, and validation of microwave sources, with typical effect 1 kW to 10 MW, as well as the development, construction, and validation of normal conducting and superconducting RF accelerating and crabbing cavities and cryo-modules containing such cavities. New methods and new technologies need to be developed and followed-up during their implementation.
Work Description: Development, simulation, construction and validation of RF power sources, RF electronics, RF cavities, and cryomodules containing such cavities, including the optimization following tests. Regular presentations of the different development steps, communication with specialists on the different topics, in Uppsala or at other laboratories, participation in the operation and evaluation of experiments at the FREIA Laboratory will be required. Actively contribute to outlook activities and education and supervision of students. Regular travel is required for national and international projects.
Prerequisites: The applicant must have a doctoral degree, at the start of employment, in physics or a related area, with at least two years of relevant experience in RF physics and the application of RF technology. Excellent capabilities to perform research shall be demonstrated through publications in peer-reviewed journals and/or at important conferences in the accelerator domain. Solid knowledge and experience in the simulation of RF accelerator cavities is an advantage. We are looking for a candidate with a strong interest in academic research, an interest to collaborate and exchange competences with other accelerator physics centers in Europe and who is willing to travel for that. Good oral and written proficiency in English is required, as well as the capacity to work both independently and in a team. The candidate shall take responsibility for the project, possibly assist in student supervision and education, be innovative and have a genuine interest in physics and technology.
