Uppsala University is a comprehensive research-intensive university with a strong international standing. Our mission is to pursue top-quality research and education and to interact constructively with society. Our most important assets are all the individuals whose curiosity and dedication make Uppsala University one of Sweden’s most exciting workplaces. Uppsala University has 42,000 students, 7,000 employees and a turnover of SEK 6.7 billion.
The Department of Chemistry – BMC is located at the Uppsala Biomedical Centre campus. It belongs to the Faculty of Science and Technology and conducts research in biochemistry, organic chemistry, analytical chemistry, and physical chemistry.
The research in biochemistry is focused on catalysis, molecular recognition, structure and dynamics of complex molecular systems, and relationships between the presence of biomolecules and synthetic chemical compounds with various disease states. It includes the design and synthesis of small organic molecules and biological macromolecules. Method and technology development is a particular strength, and the development of new biochemical, analytical and biophysical methods enables advanced studies of biological systems and their regulation, and how diseases can be diagnosed and treated. Scientists with expertise in biophysical methods of interaction analysis are responsible for a facility belonging to SciLifeLab, part of a national infrastructure for research in life science.
The creative and research-intense environment contributes to a broad knowledge-base as well as cuttingedge expertise. In addition, Uppsala University has a highly developed innovation office that gives support for commercialization and external collaboration. Read more here.
Uppsala University offers one of the country's best educations in chemistry, with strong links to worldleading research. The Department of Chemistry – BMC is responsible for the Bachelor and Master programs in Chemistry, and the Master of Science in Chemical Engineering, together with our colleagues in the Faculty of Science and Technology and in the Faculty of Pharmacy, and contributes extensively in many other education programs. A wide range of courses, excellent research connections, and extensive lab work characterizes the education. Read more here.
We are looking for a researcher in biochemistry.
The researcher will work in an exciting international project focused on developing proteins for medical applications. It is currently funded through a three-year contract for commissioned research. One year of the project has now passed and we are looking for a person to complement the two researchers who are already employed in the project.
Examples of current tasks:
- Production and purification of recombinant adhesive proteins
- Improvement of the adhesive strength of mussel adhesive protein (MAP)
- Development of medical products utilizing the anti-oxidative and anti-inflammatory properties of MAP
- Increasing the stability of epidermal growth factor in solution at room temperature
The work will involve the production of recombinant and naturally occurring proteins, with large scale protein purification as a particularly important method. Many of the proteins are previously uncharacterized, have complex structures and properties, and are post-translationally modified, which requires both creative and new solutions for production and handling. The work requires extensive characterization of proteins and other biomolecules using advanced biochemical, analytical and biophysical methods. It will focus on the development of new biotechnology products and require documentation that is suitable for securing international ownership and patenting, while allowing publication of research results.
To qualify, you must have a PhD in biochemistry, or a degree judged as comparable to a Swedish PhD. You must have proven experience of large-scale protein production, purification and analytical protein chemistry.
We emphasize the importance of personal suitability for this position. You must be strongly motivated to carry out the work of the projects and contribute to product development by providing new creative ideas. This project requires that you can work independently while also having excellent collaborative skills, as the project requires you to collaborate with researchers from industry and other universities, inside and outside Sweden. You must be well organized and systematic in your lab work, as well as reliable and disciplined, so that laboratories and instruments are kept clean and in good working order.
We expect you to be proficient in oral and written English in order to interact and communicate effectively with all employees as well as to publish internationally.
Desirable / qualifying requirements
Experience in both industrial and academic research in biotechnology or medical products is a merit, as well as work with mammalian cell cultures, immobilised enzymes and experience of project management.
For this recruitment, the university will only consider candidates who, after an overall assessment, show the highest qualifications and personal qualities for performing and developing project tasks and contributing to the positive development of the department and its activities.
Uppsala University strives to be an inclusive workplace that promotes equal opportunities and attracts qualified candidates who can contribute to the University’s excellence and diversity. We welcome applications from all sections of the community and from people of all backgrounds.
Salary: Individually negotiated salary.
