Project description and work duties:
The Division of Nanotechnology and Functional Materials has several years of experience from developing organic electrode materials for energy storage. During the past two years there have been significant advances made in collaboration with industrial partners for batteries composed of cellulose and conducting polymers. Additionally, there has been progress within catalytic reactions involving molecules from the residue stream from the paper industry.
We intend to start a new project in the field of green chemistry for production of monomers from renewable materials. These monomers form the basis for a highly attractive conducting polymer, which has several commercial applications and is annually included in over 1000 scientific peer reviewed articles particularly focussing on energy storage.
Today the production of the monomers relies on crude oil sources, but a shift towards processes utilizing abundant and renewable material is coveted.
The work tasks include organic synthesis and characterisation of small molecules, as well as operation and handling of equipment for a flow reactor. We are looking for a dexterous organic chemist with practical skills to develop continuous flow processes for production of molecules from lignocellulosic biomass feedstocks.
Qualifications: PhD in organic chemistry, or corresponding degree within related research field. The applicant needs to master techniques like LC-MS, GC-MS, NMR and methods for separation and isolation of small molecules.
A background within synthesis and characterisation, as well as experience from flow chemistry and catalysis is an advantage.
We expect the candidate to be proficient in oral and written English in order to interact and communicate effectively with all employees as well as to publish internationally. Excellent pedagogic and collaborative skills are required.
Personal qualities, such as the ability to manage and run scientific projects and to simultaneously interact with other researchers are very important. The applicant needs to be determined, structured and able to work effectively both individually and in groups.

Salary: Individually negotiated salary.
