More than 350 teachers, doctors, researchers and doctoral students work at the Department of Neuroscience, in clinical and basic scientific disciplines alike. The Department works at both Uppsala University Hospital and Uppsala Biomedical Centre. It is relevant to this call for applications that adult psychiatric services are available in the Department and collaboration with the child and adolescent psychiatric services is well established.
Subject area: Child and Adolescent Psychiatry.
The position includes teaching in the Department’s basic and advanced education, mainly in the medical program in the subject area of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, and in other closely connected subjects such as Adult Psychiatry. The duties also include management and organisational tasks; research and clinical practice as a specialist or consultant physician; and monitoring developments in the appointee’s own subject area and those in society at large that have a major bearing on work at the University.
To be eligible for employment as a professor, the applicant must have shown both research and teaching expertise (Swedish Higher Education Ordinance, Chapter 4, Section 3). Under the Appointment Regulations for Uppsala University (§ 5), having the personal characteristics required to perform the duties of the post well is a general eligibility requirement for teachers.
Research expertise must have been demonstrated by means of independent research contributions and by the candidate’s work being of consistently high quality by international and national standards. The applicant must have demonstrated proficiency in planning, initiating, leading and developing research; have shown a capacity to obtain research grants on a competitive basis; and exhibit well-documented expertise in supervising students at research (third-cycle) level. The applicant’s contributions to the international and national scientific community will be assessed according to criteria including quality and scope of academic publications in the publishing channels most relevant to the subject concerned.
Teaching expertise must be demonstrated by educational and teaching qualifications (see § 23 of the Appointment Regulations for Uppsala University). In addition, the applicant must demonstrate well-documented expertise in supervision in the first, second and third cycles. A precondition for the applicant being judged to have teaching expertise is completion of teacher training for higher education relevant to the work concerned, comprising at least ten weeks, or corresponding knowledge. If special reasons apply, this academic teacher training may be implemented during the appointee’s first two years of employment. The teacher training must include training in third-cycle supervision.
The applicant must have a documented ability to teach in Swedish and English, unless special reasons apply.
To be eligible for this position, the candidate must have a specialist qualification in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry. If the person offered the appointment also meets Uppsala University Hospital’s requirements for appointment as a consultant physician, the applicant will be offered the professorship in combination with employment as a consultant physician.
In the appointment to this professorship, weight will be assigned primarily to both research and teaching expertise, with particular emphasis laid on research expertise. Balancing of assessment criteria will nevertheless take place so that an applicant who is judged to be much more skilful in terms of teaching than another applicant who is slightly more skilful in terms of research may be ranked above the latter. Equal care will be devoted to the review of teaching expertise and that of research expertise. Clinical expertise is also important for the position and will be given weight.
In assessment of research expertise, scholarly quality will be the primary consideration. The scope of the applicant’s research, especially in terms of breadth and depth, will also be regarded as important. Further, consideration will be given to the applicant’s ability to plan, initiate, lead and develop research and education in the third cycle; capacity to acquire funding for research in competition; and demonstrated ability to interact with others both within academia and in the wider community. In assessment of teaching expertise, teaching quality will be the primary consideration. The scope of the applicant’s teaching experience, in terms of both breadth and depth, will also be given consideration. Further, weight will be assigned to the applicant’s capacity to plan, initiate, lead and develop teaching and instruction, and ability to connect research with teaching on the basis of research in the subject concerned, subject didactics and teaching and learning in higher education. Ability to interact with stakeholders in and outside the University concerning issues of academic teaching and learning is also included in teaching expertise. See also § 4 of RB.
Clinical expertise is important for the appointment and will be given weight. Clinical expertise is demonstrated through clinical work, clinical education and participation in clinical development. Clinical development entails such work as measures that have improved healthcare or made it more efficient.
When the University appoints new teachers, the applicants selected are those who, after qualitative all-round assessment of their proficiency and expertise, are deemed to have the best prospects of implementing and developing the work duties in question and of contributing to positive development of activities.
Assessment criteria: other expertise
Expertise in the areas of management and in administration are important for the appointment and weight will be assigned to both. Ability to cooperate with the community at large, and to inform others of research and development, will also be taken into account.
Management expertise is demonstrated through ability to lead activities and staff, take decisions, assume responsibility, motivate others and provide them with what they require for efficient achievement of common goals. Ability to coordinate a group and to help generate a sense of commitment, enhance participation and enjoyment of work, and ability to deal with conflicts, are further examples of how expertise is demonstrated. According to the Appointment Regulations for Uppsala University, administrative expertise is demonstrated through, for example, the capacity to plan, organise and prioritise work in a manner that is efficient and adapted for the purpose, and also the ability to specify and adhere to time frames. This form of expertise includes overall work planning; ability to manage resources in a way that reflects operational priorities; and ability to work in a structured manner and on the basis of an awareness of goals and quality. Under § 6 of RB, in assessment of collaboration expertise, weight must be assigned to experience of and expertise in scientific popularisation; editorship and other activities related to knowledge exchange between universities and the surrounding world; and experience of innovation and entrepreneurship.
The aspect of gender equality will be applied if, after an all-round qualitative assessment, two applicants of the same gender are deemed to have equivalent or virtually equivalent qualifications.
The applicant’s parental leave, part-time work due to care of children or the like will count as qualifying work experience.
