PhD student in pharmaceutical sciences within Molecular Pharmaceutics
Uppsala University is a comprehensive research-intensive university with a strong international standing. Our mission is to pursue top-quality research and education and to interact constructively with society. Our most important assets are all the individuals whose curiosity and dedication make Uppsala University one of Sweden’s most exciting workplaces. Uppsala University has 44.000 students, 7.100 employees and a turnover of SEK 7 billion.
The Department of Pharmacy offers a stimulating multidisciplinary working environment in research and teaching within the Pharmacy disciplines. The Department centers its research on Drug Delivery, Rational Drug Usage and Pharmaceutical Materials Science. The research groups represent a unique cluster of academic competences in Sweden and the Department of Pharmacy has thus a key role in the development of the pharmacy discipline in Sweden. Information about the department and the research groups can be found at www.farmfak.uu.se/farm/.
The PhD student will linked to the Drug Delivery Research group. The research group provides a strong international research environment and has about 40 members of which 10 are PhD students, 10 are postdocs and 15 are researchers and professors. The group takes a multidisciplinary approach and combines bioinformatics and computational chemistry with cell- and molecular biology, biopharmaceutics, pharmaceutics and physical chemistry to find new ways to predict and define rate-limiting barriers to the absorption and organ distribution of different types of drugs. We anticipate that our research will provide insights into new mechanisms for drug absorption, disposition and delivery, which will support development of new therapeutic strategies for efficient oral drug delivery. For more information about the Drug Delivery research group, see http://farmaci.uu.se/research/drugdelivery/about-us/.
The effectiveness of a drug is dependent on its tissue, cellular and subcellular uptake and distribution. New technologies in cell biology, mass spectrometry and high resolution imaging and microscopy now makes it possible to establish small 3D cultures of primary human cells, to quantify and explore the drug interaction with thousands of proteins and metabolites and find out drug-specific tissue, cellular and subcellular distribution. The PhD student will use these state-of-the-art technologies to investigate the link between tissue/cellular/subcellular bioavailability and effect. For this purpose, freshly isolated tissues and primary cultures of human intestinal and liver cells will be used. The results will be applied in systems biology modelling for improved predictions of drug fate in man. For recent examples of how we use global proteomics and intracellular bioavailability to investigate fundamental scientific problems in our field, see PMID 30560367 and PMID 28701380, respectively. The PhD studies will be performed in Per Artursson´s research group, see http://farmaci.uu.se/research/drugdelivery/research/artursson/.
An MSc degree in a relevant field is required. The ideal candidate is highly motivated, organized, reliable team player that can also work independently and has thorough education and strong interest in the research field. Candidates must be fluent in English.
Previous experience with experimental setups, the wet-lab, bioinformatics and computer modelling are beneficial.
The successful candidate will devote most of the time towards his/her research level education. Other service activities within the department, e.g. teaching and laboratory maintenance are included within the framework of the education. The position will be extended with the time devoted to teaching (maximum 20 %) to allow four years of full time graduate studies. Information about education at the postgraduate level, admission requirements and admission decisions can be found at http://www2.medfarm.uu.se/utbildning/forskarniva/vill_du_borja/.
