Sort on published: 2014-11-25

Uppsala University is a comprehensive research-intensive university with a strong international standing. Our mission is to pursue top-quality research and education and to interact constructively with society. Our most important assets are all the individuals whose curiosity and dedication make Uppsala University one of Sweden’s most exciting workplaces. Uppsala University has 42,000 students, 7,000 employees and a turnover of SEK 6.7 billion.

Uppsala University is one of Sweden’s most prestigious universities. The Department of Chemistry, BMC is located at the Uppsala Biomedical Center and is a joint department between organic, analytical, bio-, and physical chemistry. It is one of the leading chemistry departments in the country. Research focuses on organic synthesis, organometallic chemistry, physical organic chemistry, and chemical biology. The Department of Chemistry consists of approximately 100 employees of whom about half are graduate students.

Project outline: The Ph.D. project will concern the synthesis and evaluation of lanthanide complexes for biological purposes. The development of new synthetic methods to access such compounds will be an important aspect of the work, as well as the photophysical characterization of the complexes. Some of the biological characterization will be carried out with collaborators, and it is expected that the student will take an active part in this work.

Appointment period: The PhD program comprises four years of full-time study. In addition, departmental duties (teaching and other laboratory maintenance duties) may be included in the scope of the employment giving a period of 5 years.

Nature of duties: The Ph.D. student is expected to carry out advanced research in synthetic organic chemistry and luminescence spectroscopy. The position will also include writing research reports and manuscripts for publication in international journals and the presentation of the results at conferences. Therefore, the candidate must have very good command of written and spoken of English. The candidate will broaden his/her perspective and knowledge of synthetic organic chemistry, spectroscopy and biological chemistry by taking graduate courses in relevant subjects.

Qualifications required: To qualify for the Ph.D. position the applicant must have at least a Masters Degree with a Major in Chemistry, a Magister degree (under the old Swedish system) or an equivalent qualification. We are looking for a focused, motivated and hard-working candidate willing to work in a stimulating research field.

Criteria for ranking: The ranking of applicants will be based on: grades, documented laboratory experience, knowledge in any of the broad research topics of the project, published research articles, demonstrated interest in the appropriate field of research, recommendation letters, and proficiency in written and spoken English. Shortlisted candidates will also be ranked according to interview performance.

Uppsala General regulations for PhD studies can be found in Högskoleförordningen 5 kap §§1-7 as well as in the university's rules and regulations http://regler.uu.se/.
