The Faculty of Theology is the oldest of nine faculties at Uppsala University and the Department of Theology covers all areas of religious studies: History of Religions and Religious Behavioural Studies, Biblical Studies, Church and Mission Studies, studies in Systematic Theology and Worldviews and vocational religious studies. The Department of Theology is the largest institution for education and research in Theology and Religious Studies in Sweden, and offers a creative environment for pursuing research or a degree.
The position as Postdoctoral Fellow in Old Testament / Hebrew Bible exegesis involves primarily the Fellow’s own research project (e.g. a monograph project which is not a rewriting of the doctoral thesis).
The primary responsibility of the Postdoctoral Fellow is to pursue her or his own research project. A certain amount of teaching at the Department of Theology may also be included – but for not more than 20% of the working time. The Postdoctoral Fellow is expected to be present at the department at least three days per week and to actively participate in the ongoing academic debate within the discipline and at the department in general.
A doctoral degree (PhD) in Theology / Religious Studies or an equivalent doctoral degree obtained a maximum of three years before the application deadline. Applicants who completed their doctoral degree at an earlier date may still be considered under special circumstances, namely if they have had periods of sick or parental leave or have occupied a leadership position in a trade union organisation. Documented knowledge of sources and recent research in the area, as well as competence in scholarly methods used in Old Testament / Hebrew Bible Exegesis. Proficiency in English, good communication skills and an ability to collaborate with colleagues are also important. Emphasis will be placed on personal suitability.
Ability to understand written and spoken Swedish.

- a copy of the official academic transcript of the doctoral degree in Theology / Religious Studies or equivalent PhD
- a copy of your doctoral thesis and any additional academic publications (maximum three additional publications)
- a description of the following:
- why you are interested in this position (around 500 words)
- how you plan to take part actively in the ongoing academic debate within the discipline and at the department (around 500 Words)
- your research project (including the problem addressed, theoretical perspective, methodology and a presentation of the materials you plan to analyse) and the project’s significance for Old Testament / Hebrew Bible exegesis (4,000–5,000 words)
- the names, e-mail addresses, and telephone numbers of three academic references;
- an indication of your earliest availability to begin the period as Postdoctoral Fellow; 1 March 2016 is the latest starting date.
Criteria for selection
When assessing eligible candidates, particular importance will be paid to (1) academic skills; (2) assessment of the academic potential of the proposed project; (3) the relevance of the project in relation to ongoing research in the discipline; and (4) capacity and readiness to take part in the ongoing academic debate within the discipline and at the department in general.
Uppsala University wishes to recruit the person who, on the basis of an overall assessment of competence, skills and documented qualifications, is considered to be the most capable of developing and completing the proposed research project.
