At a comprehensive, broad university like Uppsala, e-learning progress is driven by individual teachers and departments. Over the years, numerous different technical and administrative solutions have also emerged within the University but later been supplemented, and in some cases replaced, by shared systems. Sometimes, the solutions have been developed by faculties or domains, an example being MedFarmDoIT. Other times, they have been central, University-wide initiatives, such as the Student Portal or the experimental classroom.
In 2014 and 2015, a comprehensive approach was adopted when the Vice-Chancellor appointed a working group (e2014) the task of surveying e-learning at the University, reviewing the evidence base for effective e-learning, and proposing concrete measures for further development in this area. The working group’s report, in turn, served as the basis for recommendations from an international panel, and in May 2015 a final report was submitted to the Vice-Chancellor. Its two key proposals concerned a new teaching platform and a broad initiative to develop the entire teaching staff’s skills in e-learning over a five-year period.
The task assigned to e2014 also included creating three MOOCs and a project for the application of experiences made by teachers during the development of e-learning at Campus Gotland.
