The University

The Björkén Prize

The prize was first awarded in 1902 on the day of John Björkén’s death, December 16.

The testament stipulates that the annual yield is to be awarded ‘as a reward for outstanding scientific research or other work based on science – either discoveries, inventions, or fruitful enhancements – that brings honor to Swedish research or contributes to the material improvement of the country.’

The prize is alternately awarded in four different fields:

  1. Botany, zoology, and landscape planning
  2. Chemistry, mineralogy, metallurgy, and geology
  3. Physics, mechanics, and engineering science
  4. Theoretical disciplines of medical sciences

Every third year the prize is awarded in the group ‘Theoretical disciplines of medical sciences’.

In remaining years it is awarded for work in a discipline belonging to the first three groups, within which the disciplines are taken in order.

The University Board selects the laureates.

The prize is awarded at the Winter Conferment Ceremony.
