Learning outcomes

On completion of the course, the student should be able to:

  • describe basic ecological principles of coastal ecosystems
  • give examples of environmental issues that concern the coastal areas of Sweden

Content

Marine ecology, particularly in coastal waters Knowledge of common plants and animals in Swedish coastal waters and on shores Knowledge of basic marine systematics The immigration of plants and animals (including man) to Sweden after the ice age. From herring-periods to depopulation

Fishing and over-fishing in the oceans and Swedish waters Elementary knowledge of physical and chemical oceanography

Instruction

The field course consists of lectures, seminars, excursions, ecological experiments and study visits

Assessment

For Pass grade, active participation is required in seminars, exercises, and excursions (3 credits), passed take-home exam (4 credits), and an independent written project (3 credits).

If there are special reasons for doing so, an examiner may make an exception from the method of assessment indicated and allow a student to be assessed by another method. An example of special reasons might be a certificate regarding special pedagogical support from the disability coordinator of the university.

Other directives

The course is intended to give the students an orientation within marine biology. It is not intended as a basis for further studies within the subject. The course consists of two parts: One part consisting of theory and practice at The Klubban Biological Station in Fiskebäckskil, and one part consisting of self-studies in topical marine environmental problems, to be presented in a written report.
