Learning outcomes

After completing the course students will be able to demonstrate competence with interpretative research by:

  • describing and giving examples of interpretative studies and flexible designs

  • comparing ands contrasting interpretative methodologies, both orally and in written form

  • design and describe semi-structured and structured interviews in written form

  • perform peer-interviews for appraisal by those peers

  • writing a comprehensive research proposal


The course will provide a broad working introduction to:

  • interpretative studies and flexible designs

  • designing an enquiry

  • methods of interpretative data collection

  • carry out and report interpretative data analysis


The course will be taught in English and will have an interactive seminar format that draws on prescribed preparatory readings


The examination will comprise of a project to construct and write up a comprehensive research proposal.
