Learning outcomes

After passing course the student is expected to

  • describe the dynamics of weather systems on a synoptic scale
  • use mathematical models describing the atmospheric circulation and its evolution
  • make a simple weather forecast by using the circulation pattern in the mid troposphere
  • account for processes influencing the development of high and low pressure systems
  • account for the effect that the earth's surface has on the atmospheric circulation
  • interpret and analyse synoptic weather charts
  • apply dynamic meteorology on synoptic weather

Content

The tree-dimensional structure of the atmpspheric circulation from a dynamic and synoptic perspective, baroclinic instability, the development of front systems, air masses, vorticity and its connection to weather, interaction between land and atmosphere, interpretation and analysis of wheater maps, jet streams, thermal wind.
