Learning outcomes

The objective of the course is to provide in-depth knowledge and insights regarding one or more key debates in contemporary cultural anthropology and related developments in anthropological theory, method and ethnography.

After accomplishing the course the student is expected to:
• Possess an in-depth understanding of key contemporary debates and developments in social and cultural anthropology;
• Be able to critically assess and compare alternative theoretical and methodological approaches to contemporary anthropological research themes.
• Be able to elaborate implications of contemporary debates in social and cultural anthropology for the student’s own Master’s thesis project.

Content

Drawing from recently published ethnographic, theoretical, and/or methodological texts in cultural anthropology, the course surveys contemporary developments in one or more subfields of cultural anthropology by means of a series of case-studies and/or thematic reviews presented in lectures, seminars and workshops.

Instruction

The course is comprised of one or more of the following forms: lectures, seminars, field practice and/or tutoring. Language of instruction is English.

Assessment

Students will be assessed based upon their active participation in seminars, written assignments, oral presentations, and the writing of a final paper. A passing grade requires at least 75% participation in class meetings and exercises.
