Companies and organisations today must be able to deal with what is happening globally. This requires individuals who have knowledge of management, strategy, decision-making and business intelligence. The Master Programme in Business and Management at Uppsala University gives you these skills, while at the same time offering you the opportunity to study in-depth in any one of the three specialisations: Marketing, International Business and Organisation.

The Master Programme in Business and Management is characterised by innovative thinking and progress where the teaching reflects the cutting edge research carried out at the Department of Business Studies at Uppsala University. This is a two-year programme with the opportunity to finish your studies after the first year.
Marketing plays a central role in creating, capturing, communicating and sustaining value for organisations and private individuals. By understanding customer needs, companies can provide customers with innovative solutions. Should you choose Marketing as your specialisation you will learn, amongst other things, how customers use information and make active choices, how companies interact with each other on strategies for the development of new products, as well as how different choices affect customer relations and other marketing efforts. The specialisation aims to educate analytically skilled employees with a special ability to face challenges in consumer markets, industrial markets and to provide a service perspective on marketing.
First year During the first year you will take courses that are common for all participants, as well as courses that are specific to the specialisation in Marketing.
Second year During the third semester, you have the opportunity to undertake an internship at a commercial company or an organisation. If you choose to take elective courses instead, there is the opportunity of a single term international exchange to study at one of our partner universities around the world. You also have the option to choose elective courses at Uppsala University. In the fourth and last semester, you will write a 30 credit Master's thesis where you will go more in-depth within a particular area of the specialisation in Marketing.
The Master Programme in Business and Management leads to a Master of Science (120 credits) in Business and Economics, with Business Studies as the main field of study. If you choose to finish your studies after one year with a 15 credit thesis you will receive a Master of Science (60 credits) in Business and Economics, with Business Studies as the main field of study.
Semester 1 and 2 During the first and second semester you will take courses that are common to all the participants in the Master Programme in Business and Management, as well as courses that are specific to the specialisation Marketing. The common courses provide a broad knowledge in management and strategic issues, decision making and business intelligence. You are given the opportunity to study commercial companies as well as public and non-profit organisations.
Those of you who choose the specialisation in Marketing will go in-depth and study both practical and theoretical issues related to marketing and marketing strategy from different perspectives. You will study among other things, marketing in consumer markets, industrial markets and a service perspective on marketing. The courses cover customers' needs and how customers use information to make active choices. Within the specialisation you will learn more about how companies interact with each other when developing new products and innovative solutions. Through lectures, seminars, case studies, simulations and direct contact with companies in Uppsala and in Stockholm you will face current strategic issues that companies face today. The specialisation is based on classical theories as well as current research in marketing, but also practical application. All courses develop and train students' analytical and critical thinking, as well as the ability to present the results and conclusions in a convincing manner, both verbally and in writing.
Semester 3 During the third semester, you have the possibility to undertake an internship or choose elective courses. Internships give you the opportunity for a one-term practice in a company or an organisation with the knowledge you have gained in the programmes courses. If you choose instead to take elective courses there is the opportunity of a one-term international exchange to study at one of our partner universities we have around the world. You also have the option to choose elective courses at Uppsala University. Studies abroad give you the opportunity to broaden and deepen your studies in business.
Semester 4 In the fourth and last semester you will write a 30 credit Master's thesis where you will go more in-depth within a particular area of your specialisation.
The teaching methods vary in character and include lectures and seminars, with various elements having ties to practice. Case studies and industry-related project work are just two examples. An important feature of working life is the ability to work in groups and in teams, which you get to practice in many of the courses in the programme. You will have, amongst other things, training in planning work, managing group dynamics, presenting and leading discussions in small and large groups.
As a student you report your knowledge and skills, both orally and in writing, individually and in groups through various forms of examination. It prepares you to work at management level within the private and public sectors, both nationally and internationally.
The programme is offered in Uppsala. All courses are taught in English, where very good knowledge of the English language is a prerequisite to benefit from the programme. The programme follows a fixed study route, which means that courses must be taken in the prescribed order.
Towards the end of the two-year programme, you will have developed a solid theoretical and practical foundation in marketing and an analytical ability to manage current marketing related challenges – whether you choose a career as a manager, marketer or business analysts. The programme also lays a good foundation for further research studies.
You should submit a copy of your GMAT test results on www.universityadmissions.se and the test centre should also send the test results directly to Uppsala University. If you apply for more than one programme at Uppsala University you only need to submit your test results once. The deadline for receipt of supporting documentation is 1 February. Please note that it might take up to 20 days for your Official Score Report to be available to us. We only look at the GMAT total score. The test results must not be older than five years on the last day for application.
Applicants who do not hold a Bachelor’s degree, but are registered for the last semester of a programme leading to such a degree, shall submit an official document from your current university stating a date of expected graduation and courses remaining before the application deadline of the Master’s programme. The entry requirements (Degree Certificate) must be validated when the semester starts.
Requirements: Academic requirements A Bachelor's degree, equivalent to a Swedish Kandidatexamen, from an internationally recognised university. Also required is 90 credits in business studies.
Language requirements All applicants need to verify English language proficiency that corresponds to English studies at upper secondary (high school) level in Sweden ("English 6"). This can be done in a number of ways, including through an internationally recognised test such as TOEFL or IELTS, or through previous upper secondary (high school) or university studies. The minimum test scores are:
IELTS: an overall mark of 6.5 and no section below 5.5
TOEFL: Paper-based: Score of 4.5 (scale 1–6) in written test and a total score of 575. Internet-based: Score of 20 (scale 0–30) in written test and a total score of 90
Students with a GMAT test result have priority. Tuition fee-paying students and non-paying students are admitted on the same grounds but in different selection groups.
