Entry Requirements

Academic requirements
A Bachelor's degree, equivalent to a Swedish Kandidatexamen, from an internationally recognised university. The main field of study must be in medicine, nursing, nutrition, or similar fields relevant for global health.

Language requirements
All applicants need to verify English language proficiency that corresponds to English studies at upper secondary (high school) level in Sweden ("English 6"). This can be done in a number of ways, including through an internationally recognised test such as TOEFL or IELTS, or through previous upper secondary (high school) or university studies.
The minimum test scores are:

  • IELTS: an overall mark of 6.5 and no section below 5.5
  • TOEFL: Paper-based: Score of 4.5 (scale 1–6) in written test and a total score of 575. Internet-based: Score of 20 (scale 0–30) in written test and a total score of 90
  • Cambridge: CAE, CPE

Layout of the Programme

Year 1
During the first semester you will get an overview of the field of global health, and touch upon areas such as global nutrition, child health, sexual and reproductive health and rights, public health in humanitarian action. Part of the semester you will also focus on research methods, both qualitative and quantitative.
During the second semester you will have time to focus, and deepen your knowledge within child health, sexual and reproductive health and rights and global nutrition.
Year 2
During the third semester you have the opportunity to choose different focus within the course. You will study qualitative and quantitative research methods, on global health systems and do a literature review. You also have the possibility to do a field research in global health if you want to collect new data for your Master's thesis, or do an internship at an organization within global health.  
During the fourth semester you will focus entirely on your Master's thesis. This includes in-depth studies within a chosen area, report writing and presentation of the report at a seminar. During the semester you will have a number of group supervisions in the form of seminars.

Semester 4 – compulsory course
Master Thesis in Global Health, 30 credits


The education is based on international health research and will be presented by researchers from our own department and occasionally invited Swedish and international researchers. Our lecturers have extensive experience of global health work in Africa, Asia and Latin America. The instruction consists of a mix of lectures, seminars, group works and assignments. You will get the opportunity to develop your ability to understand, interpret and critically evaluate scientific literature and you practice this by discussing the results and methodology and summarize facts and hypotheses.
The examination consists of written exams, assignments and active participation in seminars and presentations. Language of instruction is English.


The programme leads to a Master of Medical Science (120 credits) with Global Health as the main field of study.
