A Bachelor's degree, equivalent to a Swedish degree of at least 180 credits (i.e. three years of full-time study), and at least 60 credits in Language Technology or Computational Linguistics; or at least 60 credits in Computer Science; or at least 60 credits in Linguistics or a
language subject along with 15 credits in programming and 7.5 credits in logic or discrete mathematics.
All applicants need to verify English language proficiency. This is normally attested by an internationally recognised test such as TOEFL or IELTS.
The Master Programme in Language Technology (computational linguistics) provides advanced training in both theoretical computational linguistics and language technology applications. Its aim is to prepare the students for a career in language technology research or development. It focuses on methods of formal analysis and modelling of linguistic phenomena that can form the basis of language technology systems. This concept covers automatic systems which process linguistic (spoken and/or written) input and/or output with a sensitivity to linguistic structure and content.
Layout of the Programme
The first semester of the two-year programme provides a basis for further studies. It consists of courses in linguistics for students with a computer science background and courses in computer science for those with a background in a linguistics-oriented subject. The first semester also includes a research-oriented overview of language technology for all Master's students. The second and third semesters provide further depth in key language technology areas, with an emphasis on statistical methods. There is also room for elective courses, allowing the student to tailor the programme to his/her career plans. The fourth and final semester is dedicated to work on a Master's thesis. The language of instruction is English.
The programme leads to a Degree of Master of Arts (Two Years), with Language Technology as the main field of study.
