Application
I want to apply to Master Programme XX. What to do I do?
Check our application page for general information on applying to Uppsala University. All applications to first and second cycle education are handled by the national website universityadmissions.se (new window), see their website for detailed information on how to apply, pertinent deadlines and required documentation. If you are a master applicant, you may also use our checklist to guide you through the application process.
Supporting Documents
What documents do I need to send in?
Your documentation must support your general eligibility as well as the selection requirements specific to the programme you are applying for. Please see the application tab on each programme page on our website for details.
What happens if some of my supporting documents arrive later than February 1st?
You may still send in your documents, but there is no guarantee that documents received after February 1st will be considered when reviewing your application.
I will not have finished my degree at the time of application. What should I do?
If your degree is not yet finished, you can still be “conditionally admitted” if you submit documentation of your studies and registration from your home university proving that you are in your last semester and that you will be issued your degree in time to start the master programme.
EU/EES citizens must be able to present their final degree on registration day
Non EU/EES citizens will not be issued a study visa until the final degree is presented to the issuing authorities.
For more information, see requirements.
Where do I send my documents?
Supporting documents regarding master applications should be sent to
University Studies in Sweden
FE 1
SE – 833 83 Stroemsund
SWEDEN
There are exceptions to this regarding a few of our master programmes which require you to send a full copy of your bachelor’s thesis/degree project directly to the appropriate department.
I cannot send my documents by mail; can I send them by fax or email?
No. Applications and supporting documents sent by fax or email will not be considered, and neither will online applications without supporting documents.
I am applying for one of the programs that require you to send in your entire thesis, but my thesis is in neither Swedish nor English. What should I do?
The thesis must be in Swedish, Norwegian, Danish or English to be accepted. If it is not, you must have the full thesis translated before sending it in.
We do not write a thesis on our programme/I do not have a thesis to send. What should I do?
Without any independent works, it will be almost impossible to make any assessment of your skills. Some departments allow you to apply with other scientific texts of a certain minimum length that can equally demonstrate your analytical and academic skills. However, it is safest to contact the appropriate department and ask them what they want you to do before sending anything in.
Eligibility
I’m studying at a university that is not internationally certified/listed in The International Handbook of Universities and Colleges. Can I still apply?
Giving a full answer is almost impossible, but we encourage you to send in your application and a full supply of supporting documents in accordance with the application instructions on universityadmissions.se. After the application and supporting documents have been submitted, a full review of your application will be performed to determine if your home university is recognised by the educational ministry/authorities of that country.
How do I know if my degree fulfils the eligibility requirements of the programme I am applying for?
We cannot make any such evaluations beforehand. After all your documents have been submitted to universityadmissions.se, a full review of your application will be performed to determine your eligibility.
Language Tests
I am studying in English, and my entire programme is in English. Do I have to supply an international test of English?
There are a few exceptions to providing an international test of English. They are listed on our homepage under General Entrance Requirements to the Advanced/Master’s Level, and on universityadmissions.se (new window). If you are the least uncertain if you are exempt, we highly recommend providing results from an international test of English to be sure.
TEOFL test scores must be sent directly from the organisation, does the same apply for IELTS?
No, you can send the score sheet along with the rest of your supporting documentation. Only TOEFL scores have to be sent directly from the organisation.
Universityadmissions.se and Your Application
My account at universityadmissions.se is not working/I cannot apply!
We cannot help you with questions regarding your account or the application on universityadmissions.se. Please turn to the universityadmissions.se contact centre (new window).
I have sent in all my documents but my status still says that requirements are not fulfilled. What is wrong?
Reviewing the many applications and supporting documents takes time. Until the process is completed your application status will remain as requirements not fulfilled. All students who send in a complete application by the indicated deadline will be notified of their selection results. We ask for your patience during this process.
What is the status of my application?
Students are formally notified of their selection results in March for fall semester studies. Admissions Service and universities can not give you any information regarding admissions decisions before this official notification. See also above.
I have just received my Notification of Selection results which says I have been placed on a waiting list for the programme. What does this mean?
If your Selection Result is listed as “Reserve” it means that you may be offered a place in the programme if one becomes available, usually because someone who was admitted declined their offer.
Financing
I have heard that Swedish students get scholarships to study, can I get that as well?
In most cases no. Visiting students are expected to finance their studies themselves. If you are not a Swedish citizen, you can receive financial aid assuming that you have a basic right to it. The National Board of Student Aid (CSN) can award you an entitlement to student aid only if you have moved to Sweden for a purpose other than study. You must also be officially registered as a resident in Sweden and must intend to remain here. Read more about the Swedish student aid on CNS’s website.
Can I get a job at the university to help finance my studies?
Uppsala University does not regularly employ students as teaching assistants or research assistants which is common at, for example, American universities, nor do we have any specific work-study programmes for students. University departments might employ exceptionally talented students for research projects, but you should never count on being able to find a job at the university.
How can I find a job outside the university?
You can find general information about working in Sweden at the website of the Swedish Public Employment Service (new window) and on Sweden.se (new window).
You can also find more specific information about working while being a student in Uppsala at the website of the Uppsala Student Union (new window).
Please note that it can be very difficult to find a job in Sweden if you cannot speak Swedish. You should have financing secured before coming to Sweden to study.
Housing
Can UppsalaUniversity provide me with housing?
If you are an applicant from outside the EU/EEA (i.e. you pay tuition fees) you are included in our one-year housing guarantee, provided that you submit a housing interest form at the time of application.
Unfortunately, we cannot extend this housing guarantee to our EU/EEA students at the moment. There is a shortage of housing in Uppsala and we advise all students to start looking for housing as soon as possible.
How can I find housing in Uppsala?
UppsalaUniversity does not own any student housing. Student housing is provided by a number of private companies, nations and organizations. The companies, nations and organizations offering student rooms or apartments are listed here (new window). Most of these companies have websites where you can register and start applying for housing. Visit the following website to look at rooms and apartments currently available to sublet in Uppsala: studentboet.se (new window).
