PhD studies

Postgraduate studies is a program which consist of a number of courses and a dissertation in which the doctoral student carries out an individual research project. The aim of the research project is to generate new knowledge in a subject of academic interest.

The studies are also designed to provide the doctoral student with greater in-depth knowledge of the subject, training in critical thinking, and the ability to identify researchable issues. After half of the study period, the program may be concluded with a licentiate degree. To be admitted as a doctoral student you must:

  • fulfill the prerequisite requirements for the subject in question

  • have the ability in general to cope with the program.

Please note that in many subjects there is a shortage of places in postgraduate studies particularly in the social sciences, humanities, and languages. It must also be noted that the competition is keen since there are so few places available at the postgraduate level.

In most cases, prior knowledge of Swedish and particularly English is useful in order for your studies to be meaningful. Admissions are handled by the respective departments. All departments are listed to the right.
