Anna Skarhed, Sweden’s Chancellor of Justice, has been named as an honorary doctor at the Faculty of Law, Uppsala University.
Skarhed has been a judge in a general court of law, including the position of Justice of the Supreme Court. She has also worked in three Swedish review boards for insurance claims (Patientskadenämnden, for patients’ injuries; Läkemedelsskadenämnden, for injuries caused by pharmaceutical drugs; and Miljöskadenämnden, for environmental damage). She is now the Swedish Chancellor of Justice.
Anna Skarhed has been an active legislator, for example chairing and serving as expert in important government committees of inquiry, and in her work she has helped to add depth and subtlety to discussions of democracy. Her citation for the doctorate states that ‘with her knowledge and integrity, she has created respect for her work achievements and person, and in her role as Chancellor of Justice, through her well-balanced decisions, she has fostered understanding of public-sector responsibility’. For many years, she has also engaged in active work in the Uppsala Lawyers’ Alumni Foundation, as well as contributing to general alumni activities at Uppsala University.
