Horizon award to Per Venge for quick blood test

2017-02-09

Per Venge, professor of clinical chemistry at Uppsala University’s Department of Medical Sciences, has been awarded the EU Commission’s Horizon Prize of EUR one million.

Per Venge has received the prestigious award for a new blood test that he has developed together with Philips Electronics.

The blood test, which quickly can determine if an infection is due to virus or bacteria, is a great help in the fight against antibiotic resistance. Since antibiotics only affect bacteria, not viruses, the test can help avoid unnecessary use of antibiotics.

The new blood test is expected to be available to patients in 2018.
