Beslut och riktlinjer

The programme is a Masters Programme in International Humanitarian Action within the framework of the Socrates programme and part of a cooperation between the universities of Universidad de Deusto, Spain, Ruhr-Universität Bochum, Germany, Université Catholique de Louvain, Belgium, Université Aix-Marseille, France, University College Dublin, Ireland, Rijksuniversiteit Groningen, The Netherlands, and Uppsala University.

The acronym NOHA (Network on Humanitarian Action) is officially connected to the programme.

The programme is given in cooperation with the European Commission Humanitarian Office (ECHO).

The degree programme is based at the Department of Theology and is carried out in cooperation with several departments at Uppsala university that have relevant research and teaching capacities within the disciplines of law, peace and conflict, cultural anthropology, management and women's and children's health in relation to humanitarian action. The programme is multi-disciplinary.

The structure of the programme was agreed on 2009-01-28 the board of the Faculty of Theology in compliance with the guidelines of the International NOHA Association.

Behörighetskrav

Examen på grundnivå om minst 180 hp

Dessutom krävs kunskaper i engelska motsvarande En B. Med en svensk kandidatexamen uppfyller du kravet på engelska. Annars brukar engelskakunskaper intygas genom ett internationellt erkänt prov:

  • IELTS: sammanlagt betyg på 6,5 och ingen del mindre än 5,5
  • TOEFL: pappersprov – 4,5 poäng (av högst 6) på skriftliga delen och sammanlagt 575; Internetprov – 20 poäng (av högst 30) på skriftliga delen och sammanlagt 93
  • Cambridge: CAE, CPE

Kunskaper i andra språk och praktisk erfarenhet inom humanitärt bistånd rekommenderas.

Mål

A student should have the following competences after successful completion of the programme:

• a good understanding of humanitarian action field

• an ability to communicate advanced knowledge concerning humanitarian to a non-academic target group, both in oral and written formats

• an ability to make independents analysis of problems in humanitarian action

Programmets uppläggning

The programme consists of the following courses:

First semester 30 HP/30 ECTS

• THE INTENSIVE PROGRAMME, 5 hp/5 ECTS

• INTERNATIONAL LAW IN HUMANITARIAN ACTION, 5 hp/5 ECTS

• GEOPOLITICS IN HUMANITARIAN ACTION, 5 hp/5 ECTS

• ANTHROPOLOGY IN HUMANITARIAN ACTION, 5 hp/ 5 ECTS

• PUBLIC HEALTH IN HUMANITARIAN ACTION, 5 hp/5 ECTS

• MANAGEMENT, 5 hp/5 ECTS

Second semester 30 HP/30 ECTS (Refers only to incoming students. Uppsala students are expected to go on mobility to another NOHA member university)

• CONFLICT, PEACE-BUILDING and RELIGION, 25 hp/ 25 ECTS

• THEORY AND METHODS, 5 hp/5 ECTS

Third semester 30 hp /30 ECTS

• INTERNSHIP, 15 hp/15 ECTS

plus one of the following three options

• LITERATURE COURSES, 15 HP/15 ECTS

• RESEARCH TRACK, 15 HP/15 ECTS (selection of students for a limited number of positions) NYTT

• OTHER RELEVANT COURSE(S) FROM A UNIVERSITY, MAX 15 HP/15 ECTS

Fourth semester 30 HP/30 ECTS

• MASTER THESIS, 30 hp/30 ECTS)

Examen

All students with a minimum first degree of three years of full-time study can after completion of 120 hp/120 ECTS including a Master Thesis, apply for a Master of Arts in Theology, with main area of studies in International Humanitarian Action 120 ECTS, from Uppsala University. Those students, who have done their second semester in another university within the network, can apply for a double degree.
